Aren’t you a little tired of the Simon Necronomicon bashing?!! It’s amazing how so many pseudo-occultists consider the book to be a work of fiction or some hoax. Of course, many of the people making such claims have not been initiated into any form of magic, but assume that they can reach their aims through the use of magic and their imagination ONLY. Some occultist shy away from the Simon Necronomicon discussions since they are not too knowledgable about the Tome and that can easily be respected for it is the way of the wise.
What I find hard to understand is that the Simon Necronomicon is labeled by many as fiction. Yet these same psuedo-occultists who label the Tome as fiction have never stopped to asked themselves; What grimoire is not fiction? I would take it then that these idiots actually believe that the Key of Solomon was written by the legendary King Solomon? Or the 5th and 6th Books of Moses were written by the prophet Moses? It’s interesting to note how these same idiots can look upon the Bible. the Qu’ran, and etc, and accept their supporters, but aren’t these same books works of fiction that have a strong and wide following? Isn’t this what makes these religions acceptable? What’s even more ironic, is how these same individuals just post up copy and paste information taken from the works of Dan Harms and John Wisdom Gonce III. I can at least give credit to Dan Harms for having done researched HIMSELF and formed his synopsis based on that. However, I am sure that when you look across the internet, Dan Harms could probably make more money sueing people who have used portions of his book on their websites without his permission because these people are too lazy to research on their own, and this is the audience that usually debunks the Simon Necronomicon, the well-read, but not the well-researched.
When the Initiate begins to work with the system and does research on the various deities listed in the Tome, they will come to an apprecite that the system laid out in the Simon Necronomicon is indeed a spiritual path. Many people have labeled the Simon Necronomicon as a form of Chaos Magick, which is completely obsurd.
The Simon Necronomicon is very specific in its instructions to be considered a form of Chaos Magick. I would say that it is a closed system, but the Mad Arab himself warns against those whodo not follow the prescribed details of the Tome
“Remember always to copy each of the formulae as I have put it down, and not to change it by one line or dot, not so much as a hair’s breadth, lest it be rendered valueless, or worse: a broken star is the Gate of GANZIR, the Gate of Death, the Gate of the Shadows and the Shells. Recite the incantations as they are written here, in the manner this prescribed. Prepare the rituals without erring, and in the proper places and times render the sacrifices.”
I do not see how the Simon Necronomicon is labeled by some as a form of Chaos Magick. The instructions in the Simon Necronomicon are very specific. From my experience, it seems that those who are unaware of the inner meanings and working of the system label it a such out of ignorance.

Before I make this statement, I want to say, for the record, that I absolutely agree with this article.
I would like to discuss one point that was made. You stated that while it has been argued that the Simon Necronomicon is a work of fiction, what grimoire is not? Does this not stand to reason that the Necronomicon & in fact, all grimoires were Chaos Magick in their inception, but through use & popularity of that particular current became codified & therefore “closed” systems?
I freely admit I may be reading too much into the article, or that my view of Chaos Magick may be skewed, but as I understand it & work with it, Chaos Magick is manipulating reality by whatever means are both effective & aesthetically pleasing to the operator at that particular time.
Many occult workers find their niche & stay with it, in that they find a set of practices & symbols that connects with them on a profound level. There are others, however, that find the same symbols & practices do not get the job done, or rather do not put them in the state of mind to accomplish the alterations of reality they are seeking to accomplish. My thought is, if this is the case now, has it not always the case? Why only in the last 30 or 40 years are occultists questioning the tried & true methods of our forbears & experimenting with what the status quo labels as absurd?
Again, let me state that I agree with this article. While I am a Chaos worker, I also have found the value in disciplining oneself to a system & a current has extreme value. If for no other reason, when tapping into an already existing current, one can also use that energy to assist their own workings in the system as opposed to the Chaos worker who has to start from scratch almost every single time. The other value in “closed systems” is they lay down & build upon an established foundation that has been experimented with & worked for a significant period of time so most of the “bugs” as it were have been worked out of the system. I think more Chaos workers should work with an established system to lay their foundation before they take their own steps into the greater reality & start blazing their own trails; they would be that much more prepared for the obstacles & challenges facing them if this were the case.
All in all, an excellent post as always, Messiah. I continue to enjoy reading them.
Personally I don’t believe that Simon’s Necronomicon is what Lovecraft’s had in mind when he was writing about his Necronomicon, and yes, I believe that it was a book written in the 70s and not found or translated. However, I respect totally the context of the book and its system of magic which I wouldn’t describe it as a Chaotic model. It is wrong indeed to say that the book belongs to the Chaos Magic literature because it’s a unique work based on ancient rituals and traditional systems of thought, rather a combination of various systems. Chaos Magic is a selective system but it does explain how magic works! Thus, necronomicon’s effectiveness could by understood under the model “everything works if you truly believe it!”. Of course, I would like to mention that this is only a theory. For my self being a psychologist, is a very good theory of understanding many kinds of magic (especially wicca).
So, I agree that Simon’s Necronomicon wasn’t intended to be a Chaotic book/system of magic, but it may be understood or/and used by Chaos Magic cosmology.

I agree with many of your observations. I personally believe that the Simon Necronomicon is a grimoire that was written in the modern era. I am also of the opinion that Simon, did not intenf on calling the book a “necronomicon,” this was Herman Slater’s idea. However, I do respect Simon as a magician and a mage. According to my interview with Denny sargent, Simon is very skilled in the arena of occult knowledge. I have even read articles from people who were involved in the process of the creation of the Simon Necronomicon, like Alan Cabal, who also admitted that Simon was uniquelt skilled in areas such as Enoochian magic, though they have a bit of a difference.
