Zoe Saldana plays Cataleya in Columbiana

It is through word of mouth that we often discover some of the best movies ever made. It’s too bad that many of these films often go unnoticed or given less than promising reviews by Hollywood executives posing as film critics. Entertainment through cinema in America has become quite a comedy show these days, especially in the way of movies that feature ethnic actors. While all forms of film have their audience and place, I am a little bit bored with seeing Black American actors and actresses in victimized roles, or some outlandish comedy, which is nothing more than a set of characters acting like Amos ‘n’ Andy with guns. Needless to say, I was happily surprised with the movie Colombiana.

Colombiana is Zoe Saldana’s current film. Many people might remember her amazing role as the character Neytiti in the movie Avatar. Saldana has no need to prove her acting skills, nor her choice in films, as she delivers yet another classic, but with a darker theme. Don’t worry I am not going to spoil the thrill of seeing the movie by going in-depth into the film’s plot. However, if you have some time to visit the movie theater, put Colombiana on your list of “must-see” films for the year, 2011. Here is a brief summary:

The basic theme of the movie is revenge. Our story begins when a young Cataleya (Amandla Stenberg) witnesses the murder of her two parents, who are involved with the criminal underworld. Cataleya, however, is able to escape the killers grasp and to find refuge in her uncle, a crime boss in his own right, Emilio.

Emilio, played by Cliff Curtis, agrees to teach Cataleya the way of the underworld if she stays in school. The film picks up 15 years into Cataleya’s life, the character, now being played by Zoe Saldana, where revenge is the motivating force behind her gun-toting sexiness. Enjoy!
