Ancient One

The Translation of the Magan Text – Part 1

This is the First Part of the Magan Text which speaks of the battle between Marduk and Tiamat. This part is based on the tablets of the Enuma Elish which consists of the Seven Tablets of Creation. The translations you will find in this article were done by L.W. King and can be found in the book Enuma Elish – Volume I. The translation in this article is incomplete, however, when I uncover new translations this article will be edited so that the reader may enjoy the powerful words of the beautiful Magan Text in the ancient tongue. The full translation of the Magan Text is a dream of mine, and the accomplishment of this work will be grand and will be for the benefit of all practitioners of the Necronomicon Tradition. The completion of this work, however, will be incredibly difficult and may take a very long time….

  • Hearken, and remember!
  • In the Name of ANU, Remember!
  • In the Name of Enlil, Remember!
  • In the Name of Enki, Remember!
  • When on High the Heavens had not been named,
  • (E-NU-MA E-LISH LA NA-BU-U SHA-MA-MU)
  • The Earth had not been named,
  • SHAP-LISH AM-MA-TUM SHU-MA LA ZAK-RAT)
  • And Naught existed but the Seas of ABSU,
  • The Ancient One,
  • (APSU-MA RISH-TU-U ZA-RU-SHU-UN)
  • (And the primeval Apsu, who begat them,)
  •  And MUMMU TIAMAT, the Ancient One
  • Who bore them all,
  • (MU-UM-MU TI-AMAT MU-AL-LI-DA-AT GIM-RI-SHU-UN)
  • (And chaos, Tiamat, the mother of them both,)
  • Their Waters as One Water.
  • (ME-SHU-NU ISH-TE-NISH I-XI-KU-U-MA)
  • At this time, before the ELDER GODS had been brought forth,
  • (E-NU-MA ILANI LA SHU-PU-U MA-NA-MA)
  • (When of the gods none had been called into being,)
  • Uncalled by Name,
  • Their destinies unknown and undetermined,
  • (SHU-MA-LA ZUK-KU-RU SHI-MA-TU LA SHI-MA)
  • (And none bore a name, and no destinies were ordained)
  • Then it was that the Gods were formed within the Ancient Ones.
  • (IB-BA-NU-U-MA ILANI KI-RIB SHA-MA-MI)
  • (Then were created the gods in the midst of heaven)
  • LLMU andLLAAMU were brought forth and called by Name,
  • (LAX-MU U LA-XA-MU USH-TA-PU-U MIT-XA-RISH)
  • (Lahmu and Lahamu were called into being, together,)
  • And for Ages they grew in age and bearing.
  • (A-DI-I  IR-BU-U I-……..)
  • (Ages increased, ……….)
  • ANSHAR and KISHAR were brought forth,
  • (AN-SHAR U KI-SHAR IB-BA-NU-MA)
  • (Then Anšar and Kišar were created,)
  • And brought forth ANU
  • Who begat NUDIMMUD, Our Master ENKI,
  • Who has no rival among the Gods.
  • (LA I-SHI SHA-NI-NA ……………….)
  • (He had no rival …………………)
  • Remember!
  • The Elder Ones came together
  • They disturbed TIAMAT, the Ancient One, as they surged back and forth.
  • Yea, they troubled the belly of TIAMAT
  • By their Rebellion in the abode of Heaven.
  • ABSU could not lessen their clamor
  • TIAMAT was speechless at their ways.
  • Their doings were loathsome unto the Ancient Ones.
  • (LA TA-BAT AL-KAT-SU-NU SHU-NU-TI I-GA-ME-LA)
  • (Their way was evil …………..)
  • ABSU rose up to slay the Elder Gods by stealth.
  • With magick charm and spell ABSU fought,
  • But was slain by the sorcery of the Elder Gods.
  • And it was their first victory.
  • His body was lain in an empty Space
  • In a crevice of the heavens
  • Hid
  • He was lain,
  • But his blood cried out to the Abode of Heaven.
  • TIAMAT
  • Enraged
  • (I-ZU-UZ-MA IL-TA-SI E-LI-TA ………………)
  • (She raged and cried aloud ……………….)
  • Filled with an Evil Motion
  • Said
  • Let us make Monsters
  • That they may go out and do battle
  • Against these Sons of Iniquity
  • The murderous offspring who have destroyed
  • A God.
  • HUBUR arose, She who fashioneth all things,
  • (UM-MU-HU-BUR PA-TI-KA-AT KA-LA-MA)
  • (Ummu-Hubur, who formed all things,)
  • And possessor of Magick like unto Our Master.
  • She added matchless weapons to the arsenals of the Ancient Ones,
  • She bore Monster-Serpents
  • (USH-RAD DI KAK-KU LA MAX RU IT-TA-LAD SIRMAXE)
  • (Made in addition weapons invincible, she spawned monster-serpents,
  • Sharp of tooth, long of fang,
  • (ZAK-TU-MA SHIN-NI LA PA-DU-U AT-TA-‘-I)
  • (Sharp of tooth, and merciless of fang)
  • She filled their bodies with venom for blood
  • (IM-TU KI-MA DA-MU ZU-MUR-SHU-NU USH-MA-AL-LI)
  • (With poison instead of blood she filled their bodies.)
  • Roaring dragons she has clothed with Terror
  • (USHUMGALLE NA-AD-RU-TUM PU-UL-XA-A-TI U-SHAL-BISH-MA)
  • (Fierce monster-vipers she clothed with terror,)
  • Has crowned them with Halos, making them as Gods,
  • (ME-LAM-ME USH-DASH-SHA-A I-LI-ISH UM-TASH-SHIL)
  • (With splendour she decked them, she made them of lofty stature.)
  • So that he who beholds them shall perish
  • (A-MIR-SHU-NU SHAR-BA-BA LISH-XAR-MI-IM)
  • (Whoever beheld them, terror overcame him)
  • And, that, with their bodies reared up
  • None might turn them back,
  • (ZU-MUR-SHU-NU LISH-TAX-XI-DAM-MA LA I-NI-‘-U I-RAT-SU-UN)

  • Remember!
  • MARDUK
  • Victor
  • Took the Tablets of Destiny
  • (I-KIM-SHU-MA DUPSHIMATI LA SI-MA-TI-SHU)
  • (He took from him the Tablets of Destiny that were not rightly his)
  • Unbidden
  • Hung them around his neck.
  • (I-NA KI-SHIB-BI IK-NU-KAM-MA IR-TU-USH IT-MU-UX)
  • (He sealed them with a seal and in his own breast he laid them)

  • (He split her up like a flat fish into two halves)
  • And fashioned the heavens and the earth,
  • With a Gate to keep the Ancient Ones Without.
  • With a Gate whose Key is hid forever
  • Save to the Sons of MARDUK
  • Save to the Followers of Our Master
  • ENKI
  • First in Magick among the Gods.
  •  From the Blood of KINGU he fashioned Man.

  • (U-BA-ASH-SHIM MAN-ZA-ZA AN ILANI RABUTI)
  • (He made the stations for the great gods)
  • Fixing their astral bodies as constellations
  • (KAKKABANI TAM-SHIL-SHU-NU LU-MA-SHI USH-ZI-IZ)
  • (The stars, their images, as the stars of the Zodiac, he fixed)
  • That they may watch the Gate of ABSU
  • The Gate of TIAMAT they watch
  • The Gate of KINGU they oversee
  • The Gate whose Guardian is IAK SAKKAK they bind.
  • All the Elder Powers resist
  • The Force of Ancient Artistry
  • The Magick Spell of the Oldest Ones
  • The Incantation of the Primal Power
  • The Mountain KUR, the Serpent God
  • The Mountain MASHU, that of Magick
  • The Dead KUTULU, Dead but Dreaming
  • ABSU, KINGU, Dead but Dreaming
  • And shall their generation come again?
  • WE ARE THE LOST ONES
  • From a Time before Time
  • From a Land beyond the Stars
  • From the Age when ANU walked the earth
  • In company of Bright Angels.
  • We have survived the first War
  • Between the Powers of the Gods
  • And have seen the wrath of the Ancient Ones
  • Dark Angels
  • Vent upon the Earth
  • WE ARE FROM A RACE BEYOND THE WANDERERS OF NIGHT.
  • We have survived the Age when ABSU ruled the Earth
  • And the Power destroyed our generations.
  • We have survived on tops of mountains
  • And beneath the feet of mountains
  • And have spoken with the Scorpions
  • In allegiance and were betrayed.
  • And TIAMAT has promised us nevermore to attack
  • With water and with wind.
  • But the Gods are forgetful.
  • Beneath the Seas of NAR MATTARU
  • Beneath the Seas of the Earth, NAR MATTARU
  • Beneath the World lays sleeping
  • The God of Anger, Dead but Dreaming
  • The God CUTHALU, Dead but Dreaming!
  • The Lord of KUR, calm but thunderous!
  • The One-Eyed Sword, cold but burning!
  • He who awakens Him calls the ancient
  • Vengeance of the Elder Ones
  • The Seven Glorious Gods
  • Of the Seven Glorious Cities
  • Upon himself and upon the World
  • An old vengeance . . .
  • Know that our years are the years of War
  • And our days are measured as battles
  • And every hour is a Life
  • Lost to the Outside
  • Those from Without
  • Have builded up charnel houses
  • To nourish the fiends of TIAMAT
  • And the Blood of the weakest here
  • Is libation unto TIAMAT
  • Queen of the Ghouls
  • Wreaker of Pain
  • And to invoke her
  • The Red Water of Life
  • Need be spilt on a stone
  • The stone struck with a sword
  • That hath slain eleven men
  • Sacrifices to HUBUR
  • So that the strike ringeth out
  • And call TIAMAT from Her slumber
  • From her sleep in the Caverns
  • Of the Earth.
  • And none may dare entreat further
  • For to invoke Death is to utter
  • The final prayer.

HERE ENDS PART 1 OF THE MAGAN TEXT

The reader should have noticed that the translations are not entirely accurate, however, in these places I have given translations that correspond to certain key elements that are found in the lines of the Magan Text.  The lines above the black-lettered translations come from the Magan Text, and the lines below the black-lettered translations are the ones that were done by L.W. King from the book Enuma Elish – The Seven Tablets Of Creation, Volume I.

  2. “He took from him the Tablets of Destiny that were not rightly his”

I see what you mean, and I guess what you say is possible (the story doesn’t elaborate on that point).

Here is another possibility: “He (MARDUK) took from him (KINGU) the Tablets of Destiny that were not rightly his (KINGU’s).

KINGU was the exalted commander of the hosts of TIAMAT, and was given the Tablets of Destiny by Her. He was slain by MARDUK who took from him the Tablets.
