Over the past few weeks we have received several questions from potential initiates of the Necronomicon Tradition, concerning the length of the Gate-Walking initiation and other topic pertaining to such. Our staff thought that it would be good to clarify some aspects of the Tradition that are often misunderstood by newcomers. We will present these as a question and answer discussion. Enjoy.

Is the One-Thousand-And-One Moons described by the Mad Arab symbolic of initiation?

This is a very interesting question often pondered by many who walk this path. In the First Testimony of the Mad Arab we read:

“THIS IS THE TESTIMONY of all that I have seen, and all that I have learned, in those years that I have possessed the Three Seals of MASSHU. I have seen One Thousand-and-One moons, and surely this is enough for the span of a man’s life, though it is said the Prophets lived much longer.”

The term “One Thousand-and-One moons” seems to be a metaphor describing the Mad Arab’s length of years since his/her discovering and initiation into the Necronomicon Tradition. We can determine such based on another passage found in the First Testimony:

“But now, after One Thousand-and-One moons of the journey, the Maskim nip at my heels, the Rabishu pull at my hair,”

From the passage cited we can see that the mad Arab counted his life from the beginning of his journey, from the time he held the Three Seals of Masshu. This means that on a stellar level our “birthday” changes from our date of physical birth to the day of our spiritual renewal when we first call the Watcher. The meaning of On Thousand-and-One moons will help us understand our journey spiritually, not only in the workings found in the Simon Necronomicon, but in life in general. The equation still remains the same.

If we were to calculate the amount of time One Thousand and One moons is in years, we can understand the strength of the Necronomicon tradition itself. There are thirteen moons in one year. 1,001 divided by 13 equals 77. This is one possibility. We will explain more on this later. However, it should be noted in the Supplementary Material To 777, appearing in the Simon Necronomicon’s Introduction, we find that from the Sphere of Kia to Anu, we have 11 spheres. This would mean that it takes seven years to pass each Gate. We will explain this shortly.

Table VII [A.C.]

Table XXV [S.]

0. . . . ANU (TIAMAT)
1. Sphere of the Primum Mobile ENLIL (ABSU)
2. Sphere of the Zodiac or Fixed Stars ENKI; LUMASHI (IGIGI)
3. Sphere of Saturn ADAR
4. Sphere of Jupiter MARDUK
5. Sphere of Mars NERGAL
6. Sphere of the Sun UTU
7. Sphere of Venus INANNA
8. Sphere of Mercury NEBO
9. Sphere of the Moon NANNA
10. Sphere of the Elements KIA
This seems to be the also suggested in the Simon Necronomicon text itself. In the Magan Text, we read about this in this symbolic passage:

“And to invoke her
The Red Water of Life
Need be split on a stone
The stone struck with a sword
That hath slain eleven men”

The other interpretation of the term “One Thousand-and-One moons” is that the term moon may refer to month, which is the case in some ancient writings. In this case, if were to take it that twelve months exist in one year, we would come up with the following calculation; 1,001 divided by 12 equals 84. It should be noted that the planet Uranus takes 84 years to orbit around the Sun once. Uranus remains in a sign for seven years before moving to the next zodiac sign. In either case, whether it is 77 years or 84 years, a change occurs in each seven-year period of the Gate-walker’s life. This is very interesting as the ancient Mesopotamians associated Uranus with Anu, and the Mad Arab calls upon DinGir Anu throughout the text. What does this all mean?

During the Gate-Walking initiation the energy-field of the Practitioner is changed and they become receptive to the same primal energies that were invoked in ancient Mesopotamia.  Life changes. It should be noted that the Gate-Walking initiation is performed in ritual with actual tools and etc. In any event, it is an internal transformation that takes place. Externally, our environment changes based on the energy we radiate. Once initiated, the Practitioner will notice that the Gates of Life, work in seven-year intervals. This means that the new-found initiate will remain in the Gate of Nanna for seven years, even if they have walked and re-walked the Gates of the Necronomicon. That is an internal process. The external process will still take seven years. Simon speaks of such in the Simon Necronomicon’s Introduction:

“Man’s power to alter the nature of his environment must develop simultaneously with his ability to master his inner environment, his own mind his psyche, soul, spirit…. Yet, he must remember that the occult powers that accompany magickal attainment are ornamental only, indications of obstacles overcome on the Path to Perfection, and are not to be sought after in themselves, for therein lies the truth Death.”

In an online article entitled Astrology – Astrology – The Days of the Week and Cycles of Seven by Chris Haycock, we read:

“In astrology all life goes round in cycles of seven. There is a period of seven times seven making up the first half century of an individual’s existence.”

Our initiation into the Necronomicon Current allows us a bit more insight into this process and understand the Gates of years spoken about by the Mad Arab and in astrology a bit clearer. We can begin to navigate through the Gates of Life more effectively after being initiated in the internal process, which imitates the stellar movements and its effect on nature alone. We are truly blessed!

  1. Yes!!!! Finaly someone else understands this the way i percieved it! I’ve thought in many a solemn hour about this transformation process, wondering if i was right or wrong, or maybe partially right, etc…?? This is well done. 777 has a lot to do with the necronomicon, as we all know.(?) And it makes sense too. Many doctors & scientist say our bodies go through changes every 7 years; i find this to be true for the most part. It’s interesting to note, that for me, it took 7 times for me tp properly walk the gate of nanna! (i know)! And i was already a well versed occultist, go figure. But not only did it take me 7 tries, i recieved my word for opening the nanna gate, 7 days after the 7th attempt. I ‘ve talked to others who say they were succesfull on the 1st attempt, & some were not for many more, that’s interesting in itself. The other gates came a bit easier for me after Nanna, although, i still have yet to do all 7, (on #5), the process for me is very long cause i can’t right now devote the proper time needed, cause of writing music, etc. Anyway, though this is quite a good read, as i’ve also pondered about the 1001 moon statement as well, but as it says in the Mad Arab’s testimony, it’s his personal number for how long he has been in the fold, so to speak. But to whomever asked this question, that Warlock answered here, as you go along your journey, it will get easier to decipher the many metaphors within the Necronomicon. Blessed Be!!

  2. Could it be symbolic of the raise of the kundalini, the one thousand and one petal lotus. This is suggested by Peter lavenda in his book stairway to heaven. A methaphor for illumination achieved during gate walking.

    1. Warlock Asylum says:

This is also another possibilty as well. Thanks for sharing 🙂 I brief through this book a while ago, but will definitely go through it again in more detail. Thanks brother!

  3. I’ve heard of the Lavenda book as well, but never read it. But i will now

  4. The books thesis is the same as the gates of the Necronomicon by Simon. It examines acension literature from various cultures from Babylon, Egypt to the merkavah and herkalot practices of the Jewish mystics. And propose the origin of these practices or using the bear asterism as the vehicle or destination for this assencion. I goes in to how even the golden dawn had this idea of walking the spheres. Just bring legitimacy to the gate walking practice.
