Human History of Sexual Intercourse With Spiritual Beings

One of the most driving forces in the human experience is sex. Our sexuality influences our experiences, the way we think, what we eat, and even our attitude about ourselves. Sex is an important part of our lives.

Sex is not only revered for its reproductive qualities, but also for its spiritual essence. The Sexual Teachings of the White Tigress by Hsi Lai explores many of the principles found in Taoist sexual practices. In one passage of the book, which quotes the White Tigress manual, it states:

“If you cannot face directly into your sexuality, You will never discover your true spirituality. Your Earthly Spirit leads to discovering your Heavenly Spirit. Look at what created you to discover what will immortalize [heal] you.”

Looking a little deeper into history, we find that sexuality is an integral part of all religious and spiritual paradigms. Sexuality reveals itself through allegory, metaphors, and symbolism. There also exists in the history of humanity accounts of men and women who were married to “spirits.” Legends such as these exist in every part of the world.

In medieval times, many women, who committed themselves to the Catholic Church, did so because they were in committed relationships with “spirits,” and could disguise these liaisons while living an ascetic lifestyle. A History of the Inquisition of Spain, Volume 3 by Henry Charles Lea, recounts the following on page 384:

“Liaisons of this kind would be entered into with demons, and would be maintained with the utmost fidelity on both sides for thirty to forty years; and the connection thus established was proof against all the ordinary arts of the exorciser. Alvaro Pelayo relates that in a nunnery under his direction it prevailed among the nuns, and he was utterly powerless to stop it. In fact, it was peculiarly frequent in such pious establishments.”

In the classic work by R.C. Thompson entitled, Semitic Magic, we an observation about life in ancient Mesopotamia, which eventually led to many sexual taboos that ruled civilizations for centuries afterwards:

“The relations between spirits and human beings were so close that both semi-divine and semi-demoniac offspring could be born of intermarriage between them, either of human mothers or fathers. From this belief in intermarriage with spirits arose the tabus on certain sexual functions. These (according to the present theory) indicate the advent, proximity, or presence of marriageable demons who would tolerate no meddling in their amours. Hence the tribesman, fearing their jealousy, segregated the contaminated person from the rest of the tribe for such time as he deemed expedient.”

A Dictionary of Islam by Thomas Patrick Hughes, B.D., M.R.A.S., states the following concerning the Jinn:

“The Jinn, it has been already shown, are peaceable. They also eat and drink, and propagate their species, sometimes in conjunction with human beings; in which latter case, the offspring partakes of the nature of both parents.”

Astral Sex

Sex between human beings and spirits can occur physically and more popularly by astral sex. Astral sex is a growing phenomena. What is astral sex? Astral Sex: The Ecstasy of Outer Body Pleasure, an online article written by Erin Pavlina, states:

“There is also a way to engage in sex where one person is astral (out of body) and one person is still in the body. If you are astral, you can go visit someone and attempt to merge your energy with theirs while they are sleeping (it won’t work if they are awake as your frequencies will be totally off). This should always and only be done with consent of the person you’re visiting, otherwise we’re talking astral rape and that’s not cool.

Once you are out of body, fly to the person’s body. You will likely see both their physical body on the bed and their astral body floating inside it, like a peanut rattling in a shell. With great love, tenderness and respect you can overlay your energy onto theirs and cast loving sexual thoughts their way. What’s going to happen is that you will experience a sexual bliss that is not localized to a body part, and your partner will either dream that they are having sex, or simply become sexually aroused without consciously realizing what’s happening.”

Surprisingly, one can discover many articles about the workings of astral sex by just simply making it a subject of a Google search. It’s interesting that the legendary “woman’s secret” is not known among the great majority of women. This secret of course is astral sex. Women who have the ability to experience greater pleasure and are able to choose whomever they will to engage in such intercourse with, this is the woman’s secret! Being able to engage in astral sex! Private eyes maybe watching you! It is also a secret held among certain men.

Shinto’s View on Intimate Relationships Between Human Beings and Spirits

While testimonies of those who have either marriage partners or lovers that exist in the astral plane may be well accounted for in many ancient religious texts, much with disdain, Shinto spirituality has always been open and clear about such relationships. In the Nihon Shoki we read about the case of Oho-mono-nushi no Kami:

“After this Yamato-toto-hi-momo-so-hime no Mikoto became the wife of Oho-momo-nushi no Kami. This God, however, was never seen in the day-time, but came at night. Yamato-toto-hime no Mikoto said to her husband: As my Lord is never seen in the day-time, I am unable to view his august countenance distinctly; I beseech him therefore to delay a while, that in the morning I may look upon the majesty of his beauty.” The Great God answered and said: “What thou sayest is clearly right. Tomorrow morning I will enter thy toilet-case and stay there. I pray thee be not alarmed at my form.” Yamato-toto-hime no Mikoto wondered secretly in her heart at this. Waiting until daybreak, she looked into her toilet-case. There was there a beautiful little snake, of the length and thickness of the cord of a garment. Thereupon she was frightened, and uttered an exclamation. The Great God was ashamed, and changing suddenly into human form,…”

In the ancient records many of the Kami are said to change back and forth into human shape to that of serpents or dragons. Similarly, in the Islamic religion we find that the Djinn, sometimes spelled Jinn, are also said to shift into human form from that of a serpent. This is no mere coincidence as the Jinn are described as existing prior to humankind. It would thus seem likely that those who are descendants of the gods are descendants of the Jinn, and due to such a gifted with clairvoyant powers. This was mentioned earlier in our discussion in reference to what was cited from the Dictionary of Islam by Thomas P. Hughes. The term Kami is also relative to the term Jinn, where the Japanese jin can also relate to something divine. The National Faith of Japan by Daniel C. Holtom states:

“In contemporary Japanese law the institutions which are called “ shrines” are generally designated jinja, from shin or jin, meaning “deity”

In the history of Shinto, it was held that races older than man held the keys to the Greater Mysteries. These races and their divine attributes were not revered or “worshipped” how Christians honor Jesus, for such is blasphemy for those who possess the esoteric knowledge of Shinto. It is simply in the nature of the esoteric man who respects any great dignitary. A deeper and non-local understanding of the term kami can be found at this link.

Another ancient legend that reveals the history of intimate relationships between human beings and spiritual creatures is the Ainu myth, Child of the Divine Lord, which is recorded for us in the Yi Jing Apocrypha of Genghis Khan:

“There once lived a very beautiful woman, who was without husband. She was arranged in marriage with a traveling merchant, but they did not lie down together in bed. Nevertheless, the woman conceived a child. The woman was greatly surprised for she did not lie in the bed of pleasure with any man. The people of the village discussed this among themselves, saying: “She has conceived a child through lying with some other man.” This is what the people of the village said. The man who was to be her husband was very angry. But he was not certain as to how she conceived a child.

The woman finally gave birth. She gave birth to a little snake. She was greatly ashamed. Her mother took the little snake, went out, and with tears in her eyes, she spoke: “What god is responsible for this act? If he should beget a child with my daughter, it would have at least been better if it was a human child. But this little snake we human beings cannot keep. As it is the child of the god who beget it, may he well keep it.” The old woman threw the snake away and went in.

Afterwards there was a loud noise of a baby crying. The old woman went out, and looked. It was a beautiful baby. The old woman carried it in. The woman who had given birth to the child was delighted with tears. The baby was found to be a boy and the mother kept her son. Years passed, and the child became a man of fine appearance and very large in stature. He was a skilled hunter.

The woman who had given birth was astonished over what occurred. It was discovered that she fell asleep in the light of the Sun, which had shone upon her through the opening in the roof. Then she dreamt a dream, which said: “I being a god, have given you a child because I love you. When you die, you shall truly become my wife. Our son, when he gets married, will have plenty of children.” After the dream the woman did worship. Accordingly, her son became a great hunter and a rich man. Eventually, the woman died without having a human husband. Her son was blessed with a beautiful wife and children. His descendants are still alive today.”

While it may seem unusual for some to enjoy a relationship with a non-physical entity, Shinto spirituality reveals a history of such relationships that were blessed by divine forces. Participants in this form of union were even more faithful at times than relationships that consisted of two physical beings.

Physical children can be produced by intimacy between a human being and a non-physical being. In such cases, the spirit would either materialize to physical form, or possess one of the parents during the time of conception. The famous Abe no Seimei was a descendant of the poet Abe no Nakamaro and a disciple of Kamo no Tadayuki and Kamo no Yasunori, 10th-century diviners of the Heian court. His father, Abe no Yasuna, was human, but his mother, Kuzunoha, was a kitsune (a “fox spirit”).

If we are to engage in such unions, let us do so with the same honor and diligence that we put into our physical relationships. This is all that Shinto requires in such regard.

  1. I’m curious to know what Shinto and Ninzuwu traditions have to say regarding multiple sexual partners, physical or not. Or even just casual sex. They seem to be gaining popularity from my vantage point, rationalized by “the way our brains are wired”, but these ideas have never resonated well with me. Exploiting base instincts in order to ascend spiritually seems contradictory to me. Then again, those I’ve seen who follow those paths don’t seem particularly mature or spiritually advanced, imho. Any thoughts?

@Lacerti….This is a very interesting question. Ninzuwu-Shinto is based on purity. It is due to such that we rarely read about the kami, or other supernatural entities acting immoral. This article is not about individuals who are victims of their sexuality, but those who have shared in monogamous relationships with non-physical entities.

Another point to take into consideration is that there have been many priests and mystics who were described as being married to the “goddess,” while having a physical wife and children. This sort of marriage is the same line of thought as Christians who have dedicated their lives to Jesus, or what have you.

Yet, it should be clearly noted that Ninzuwu and Shinto are not in support of immorality. One article that touches on this lightly can be accessed by clicking on the following link:
