ASMR- Waves of happiness

Many of you dear readers are familiar with Bob Ross, and did you know that he is considered to be the ‘Father of ASMR’? No? Me neither until shortly. If you look at it closely, you may know why you watched him for hours and seemingly never got enough of it.

But first things first what does that word ASMR stand actually for and what is it now?

ASMR stands for Autonomous sensory meridian response-

  • Autonomous – spontaneous, self-governing, within or without control
  • Sensory – pertaining to the senses or sensation
  • Meridian – signifying a peak, climax, or point of highest development
  • Response – referring to an experience triggered by something external or internal

ASMR may sound alien at first but it is just a way of describing the awesome tingles people feel when being exposed to a certain stimuli. These stimulus can be auditory (sound),visual (image) and/or olfactory (smell). Imagine someone brushing  your hair or gently tapping over a smooth surface. This response of amazing chills all over your body is you experiencing ASMR. Simple as that! Some call this feeling a ‘’Brain Orgasm’’ but don’t be mistaken, it really has nothing do with sex. It usually starts on the top of your head,  gets down to your spine and into your limbs. Sometimes it just stays on the top your head. But it’s not only gentle hair brushing or tapping that put you into this state ,no there are so many triggers and various categories.

For example when you start up an ASMR video you will be greeted by a whispering host of the channel and that already is in itself a trigger. A soothing soft voice is very popular among the viewers. They like just listening to it reading out of a book or counting down from 100. Even unintelligible whispering paired with hand movements is very much liked.

Or another example would be a personal attention role play. From doctor doing a regular check up on you to Masseur giving you a Spa treatment, all of these roles the ASMRtists (creators of the ASMR videos) can provide for their viewers and pampering them to the fullest.

The choice is just huge and so are the views on YouTube! Millions of people watch it and it has become a thing on the internet. Now you may understand better why Bob Ross was and still is so popular, not only because of the amazing paintings, no he put people into a state of deep relaxation and joy, what ASMR also does. Do  you see now the link between the two? Just go ahead and pay attention to the things Bob says and how he says them. How does that make you feel?

There is also the possibility that you haven’t experienced ASMR at all which is completely fine seen as that it is, as Olivia from Olivia’s Kissper ASMR explains it, a subjective experience and not everyone reacts to the same trigger. It may be that you still have to come upon your personal stimuli. I share the believe with many others that ASMR can be felt by everyone.

For best effects ASMR videos are watched with headphones on.  For sleeping while an ASMR video is running, you have nowadays so called SleepPhones which you could wear.

If you suddenly are not getting the nice tingles so much or not all anymore, then it might be that you have watched too much ASMR videos in one go.  A little pause of one or two weeks should do the trick.

The reason why ASMR works so good is because of the brain. Yes the brain! It cannot tell between a face-to-face interaction or an online role play. That’s because of the emphatic human connection and mirror neurons. (source: Olivia Kissper’ s website which I will link down below)

Maybe you are asking yourself why you should try it or what the purpose of it is. I think ASMR is really an interesting and unique experience. Just finding what is your personal trigger is in my opinion fascinating, you come to know yourself even better.

Besides of the nice part of discovering your taste, it can help very much with serious issues.(Disclaimer:I am NOT a certified doctor, I didn’t go to medical school or have a degree. What I write is only my and other people’s view. Please seek professional help if you need it.) ASMR can help with insomnia,  depression,  lowering the stress level,  anxiety and panic attacks. Some have claimed that it helped them reduce suicidal thoughts and PTSD.

My experience with ASMR was and is until today amazing. It helped me sometimes gaining a fresh source of energy and focus. I even caught myself many times waking up from a deep sleep which was brought up from an ASMR video 🙂

Coming to like ASMR videos on YouTube is a funny story.  I think I once saw on the recommendation list something called ASMR kissing sounds and I thought to myself what the heck is that? Is it something sexual? (what I think many do when discovering it for the first time) I didn’t want to click on it to be honest. But eventually my curiosity was not satisfied and I typed ASMR into the search bar. And oh my… I don’t regret it. My first ASMR video was from Maria from GentleWhispering and since then I am on this wonderful journey. I loved it from day 1 and I’m so happy to have given this a try.

My recommendation of ASMRtists  are Maria from GentleWhispering, Olivia from Olivia’s Kissper ASMR , whose website I referred to, and Heather from Heather Feather ASMR. I tried many others and always came back to at least one of the three, mostly to Olivia. But that is just a personal preference. It might even be that you don’t like them at all and prefer another one. There are many talented ASMRtists out there!

I hope you enjoyed it until here and maybe give it a try. You don’t have to go to YouTube, the wonderful thing about it is that it can be also experienced in your everyday life, maybe you just didn’t notice it yet.
