Fans of H. P. Lovecraft are excited to discover that an important aspect of the Cthulhu Mythos, as the city of R’lyeh’ existence  is now being confirmed by modern science. R’lyeh (pronounced /ˈɹu.li.a/ or /ɹɪl.ˈai.ɛ/)[ is a fictional island city created by H. P. Lovecraft, which makes its first appearance in the 1928 short story “The Call of Cthulhu“. The land mass is also referred to in Lovecraft’s “The Mound.”

Interestingly, the location of R’lyeh given by Lovecraft was 47°9′S 126°43′W in the southern Pacific Ocean. August Derleth placed it at 49°51′S 128°34′W. Both locations are close to the Pacific pole of inaccessibility or “Nemo” point, 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W, These locations were thought to be a point in the ocean farthest from any land mass until recent evidence of a “lost continent” has come to the fore.

According to a report published by NBC News, scientists have discovered a new continent in the Pacific Ocean. Published on February 18th, 2017, the news article entitled, Scientists Say They’ve Discovered a Hidden Continent Under New Zealand, states the following in reference to the newly discovered continent that is called Zealandia by academics:

“This newly proposed continent is about 1.74 million square miles in size and 94 percent submerged. But at its highest points, it protrudes above the ocean surface in the form of New Zealand and New Caledonia, according to a paper published in GSA Today, the journal of the Geological Society of America …… Zealandia is believed to have broken away from Australia about 80 million years ago and sunk beneath the sea as part of the break-up of the super-continent Gondwanaland.”

According to Lovecraft’s short story, R’lyeh is a sunken city in the South Pacific and the prison of the entity called Cthulhu.

“The nightmare corpse-city of R’lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.” — H. P. Lovecraft, “The Call of Cthulhu” (1928)

  1. Didymus20X6 says:

R’lyeh’s location is only about 2,800 miles east of this location. So, actually, nowhere close.

    1. Not according to the proper calculations! This info has been verified numerous times.

  2. Didymus20X6 says:

Still nowhere close. According to the article, the location of this place is just under New Zealand, right? New Zealand is nowhere close to the Nemo Point, or to Lovecraft’s R’lyeh. Just look a a map for goodness sake, and you’ll se exactly what I’m talking about.

    1. That’s incorrect. Thus far you have not compared the coordinates but then again I understand why you guys haven’t

  3. WHAT THE OLD ONES PROMISE HUMANKIND:: Grotius posited that individual human beings had natural rights. Thomas Hobbes famously said that in a “state of nature”, human life would be “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short”. In the absence of political order and law, everyone would have unlimited natural freedoms, including the “right to all things” and thus the freedom to plunder, rape, and murder; there would be an endless “war of all against all” (bellum omnium contra omnes) that the Old Ones would bestow on humanity.
