Originating in New York City, the progressive rock band Book of Harmony is food for the soul. Led by composer and guitarist Anupam Shobhakar, Book of Harmony has built an orchestra of exotic landscapes. Filled with expressions of various genres, this is one act that takes pride in producing music of the highest quality. Book of Harmony’s self-titled album has proven to be a breath of fresh air for music fans from around the world.

Book of Harmony is a full-length album featuring fourteen tracks. Each song is a chord in the web of destiny that the band has created for itself. Coupled with a tremendous vocal performance by songstress Leah Martin, the energy and drive of band members Jon Perkins (guitars), Phil Duke (bass), Michael Sutton (drums), Takahiro Izumikawa (keys), and Anupan Shobhakar (composer/guitars) remains unprecedented.

The album begins with Echoes of Freedom, an acapella track of layered vocals that serves as the perfect intro for what is to follow. Book of Harmony, the album’s title track, makes clever use of music for what it is, art. The song holds an abundance of emotions.

Every track on the album is its own dimension. Water has a warm organic sound and structure. Leah’s vocal on this track really sparkles, as she rides with the bass and the drums to create something poetic. Ode To The Beast is a charming pianist track that is somewhat of a departure from the album’s musical themes, but is quite a charmer. Later in the Book of Harmony album, we encounter The Dark Isle, which is a melody created by the brilliant use of bagpipes.

Angels and Demons, a track appearing on the latter half of the album, reveals the depth of the Book of Harmony band, Shining Darkness is an explosive tune that is sure to take listeners into another world. While this track is a bit more guitar heavy than some of the previous material, it works well in captivating our attention for the genuine raw talent that it possesses. The album ends with the enchanting song, Signs Of Life (Intimations Of Immortality), which expounds on electronic riffs and synthetic atmospheric sounds.

Overall, the Book of Harmony is a rock classic. I am reminded of the likes of the English band Arzachel, or Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. Yet, this album is so much more. The Book of Harmony album is something that can be enjoyed, but also studied by those in the academic world for its continuity and application of musical theory. Bravo!
