Wolves in France: Farmers fear attacks

France has a long history with Wolves. There are 2 She Wolf Queens of France. One is Queen Isabella of the early 1300’s and Queen Margaret of the later 1400’s. Wolves have a unique history in France. I’d like to start with The Beast of Gevaudan. This massacre occurred in south-central France between the years 1764 and 1767. The Death toll amounted to 113 killed, 49 injuries and 98 of the victims killed were partly eaten. Supposedly, This was a ferocious beast that nobody could catch. The attacks went on for years. On June 19, 1767 The Beast met his demise when he was shot by a farmer with a silver bullet. The date is pretty ironic when seeing I’m writing this story on 6/20. This story The Beast of Gevadaun, on a psychological theatrical sense, conceals the true ravaging stories of Old Europe, separates the Human from the Animal and begins the more animatistic view the basis of our Modern day stereotype.

In France, the term for a man who turned into a Wolf is Loup Garou. Even the Catholic church has a history with Brother Wolf. St. Patrick turned a whole pagan town into Werewolves. Its called the Werewolves of Ossory.
