In 1996, Caridad made her first appearance at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe as “La Bruja,” representing the fusion of poetry and magic in her performances. After the 9/11 attacks, she wrote her signature poem, WTC, which she later performed on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam in 2002. On-screen, she has been featured in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, while onstage she has performed in Pedro Pietri’s El Spanglish Language Sandwich. Her honors include a Jerome Foundation Artist Fellowship, a Puerto Rican Women Legacy Award, and the Edgar Allan Poe Award from The Bronx County Historical Society.
Caridad, as Executive Director of the Nuyorican Poets Café, is committed to preserving and promoting poetry’s rich legacy.
