Why The Necronomicon Tradition Was Outlawed in Ancient Babylon

The Ancient Ones: Pre-Babylonian Practitioners of the Necronomicon Tradition

Greetings! I would like to welcome everyone to the Simon Necronomicon Gate-Walker’s Info Page. If this is your first time here, I would suggest that you review some of our previous articles, and more importantly, enjoy your day.

Over the past 30 years there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the Simon Necronomicon, and many, without the proper magical experience, have erroneously taken the workings of the book very lightly only to find themselves in a series of negative situations. Others, who have taken the time to undergo initiation and study this science with due respect, have benefited greatly.  This has raised up some questions as regards to the workings of the tome, whether it is a rite of “dark sorcery?”

The “Watcher” is invoked in the majority of the rituals in the Simon Necronomicon, except when the workings of the Ancient Ones are described. Could it be possible then that the Gate-Walking Initiation rite, is an introduction leading the candidate into the Urilia Text? Let us take a closer look into all of this by examining the words of the Mad Arab. The Mad Arab writes the following in his First Testimony:

THIS IS THE TESTIMONY of all that I have seen, and all that I have learned, in those years that I have possessed the Three Seals of MASSHU.”

The Three Seals of Masshu are the keys that were given to the Mad Arab, which unlocked the technology of the Ancient Ones. They were an essential part of the Mad Arab’s initiation. Notice what is written in the Conjuration of the Watcher section of the Simon Necronomicon:

“Great care must be taken that this untamed Spirit does not rise up against the Priest, and for that reason a preliminary sacrifice must be made in a clean and new bowl with the appropriate sigils inscribed thereupon, being the three grey carven signs of the Rock of my initiation,..”

These three carven signs are none other than the Arra, Agga, and the Bandar symbol. Over the past years we have discussed these symbols in length and the reader will do well to re-read some of the following articles:

http://warlockasyluminternationalnews.com/excerpt-from-the-atlantean-necronomicon-the-fall-of-christianity/inner-meanings-of-the-simon-necronomicon-part-mountains-of-masshu/

http://warlockasyluminternationalnews.com/the-bandar-sign-part-1-kutulu/

There are additional articles giving some deeper insights into the subject of these Three Seals, which are listed in our menu section. One note of interest about the passage we just cited is that the Mad Arab describes the Watcher as an “untamed Spirit.” This would seem to indicate that the Watcher is from the underworld, and if he/she is instrumental in Simon Necronomicon workings then these are of an underworld nature. Another thing that should be noted concerning these Three Seals is what we find mentioned in the Invocation of the Nergal Gate:

“Gate of the Lord of the ARRA and the AGGA, Open!

Here we see that Nergal is described as the Lord of the Arra and the Agga. Nergal is the ruler of the Underworld. The Chart of Comparisons, appearing in the Simon Necronomicon’s Introduction aligns the Arra with the Plough Sign, which is popularly known as the Big Dipper.
The Five-pointed grey Star carven The Pentagram The AR, or UB (Plough Sign; the original pentagram and the sign of the Aryan Race)
In the Sumer Aryan Dictionary, page 7,  by L. A. Waddell we find the following definition for the term Agga:

“Spirits (? Fiery) of the Deep. Evil Spirits.”

This definition may raise up quite a few questions, but do confirm for us, briefly, that the Three Seals of Masshu, primarily, refer to the workings of the Underworld.

“Know, fourthly, that it is become the obligation of the Priests of the Flame and the Sword, and of all Magick, to bring their Power to the Underworld and keep it chained thereby, for the Underworld is surely the Gate Forgotten,.. And their Books are the Books of CHAOS and the flames, and are the Books of the Shadows and the Shells. And they worship the heaving earth and the ripping sky and the rampant flame and the flooding waters; and they are the raisers of the legions of maskim, the Liers-In-Wait. And they do not know what it is they do, but they do it at the demands of the Serpent,..”

When we look into the Simon Necronomicon’s section on the Watcher and compare that with what is said in the Book of Calling, we are able to get a clearer perspective about the Necronomicon Tradition:

“Cease to be the Sleeper of EGURRA…Cease to lie unwaking beneath the Mountains of KUR…Rise up, from the pits of ancient holocausts!..Rise up, from the old Abyss of NARR MARRATU!”

Based on the passage cited above, which is the Normal Invocation of the Watcher, we can clearly see that the Watcher is an Underworld entity/energy. The term “egurra” also known as eturra means underworld. The term “kur” can also be defined as the underworld. The “old Abyss of Narr Marratu” is defined in Amulets and Superstitions by E. A. Budge, page 116:

“She must then make her way over the mountains which block the road to hell, and when this is done she must cross the river of hell, which is no other than the great World-Ocean Nar Marratu.”

The “she” mentioned above by Budge is DinGir Lamashtu, wherein Nar Marratu is described as the “river of hell.” I must also state that the term “Watcher” can relate to an angel, as seen in the 50 Names of Marduk who are described as careful Watchers of the Outside. In this case, however, we are referring to the Watcher invoked after the Fire God Gibil in Necronomicon ritual. So far it appears that this Watcher is an Underworld entity. Now let us look at the opening statements in the Simon Necronomicon’s Book of Calling:

“This is the Book of the Seven Demons of the Ignited Spheres, of the Seven Demons of the Flame…This is the Book of the Priest, who governeth the Works of Fire!”

In the rites of Calling, the Watcher is invoked shortly after the Fire God. All the energies that the Book of Calling lists in its opening, dwell in the realm of Ereshkigal.

“THIS is the Book of the Ceremonies of Calling, handed down since the time the Elder Gods walked the Earth, Conquerors of the Ancient Ones.
This is the Book of NINNGHIZHIDDA, Horned Serpent, the Lady of the Magick Wand.
This is the Book of NINAXAKUDDU, The Queen, Mistress of the Incantations.
This is the Book of ASALLUXI, the King, the Lord of Magick.
This is the Book of AZAG, the Enchanter.
This is the Book of EGURA, the Dark Waters of ABSU, Realm of ERESHKIGAL, Queen of Death.
This is the Book of the Ministers of Knowledge, FIRIK and PIRIK, the Demon of the Snake-Entwined Magick Wand and the
Demon of the Thunderbolt, Protectors of the Arcane Faith, the Most Secret Knowledge, to be hidden from those not of us,
from the uninitiated.
This is the Book of ASARU, the Eye on the Throne.
This is the book of USHUMGALLUM, Mighty Dragon, born of HUBUR, of the Battle Against the Elder Gods.
This is the Book of ENDUKUGGA and NINDUKUGGA, Male and Female Monsters of the Abyss, of the Claws like
Daggers and the Wings of Darkness.
This is further the Book of NAMMTAR, Chief among the Magicians of ERESHKIGAL.”

Some have seen this and just dismissed it as some sort of dark poetry, and then look at the rites in the tome as some sort of “white lighter’s” hide and seek game. Nothing could be further from the truth. Chaldean Magic by Francois Lenormant, page 26, defines the Seven Demons of the Ignited Spheres:

“The demons of the Babylonians were of two kinds. The most powerful and formidable were those of which had a cosmical character, whose action was exercised upon the general order of nature, and whose wickedness had power to trouble it…we saw that the seven bad spirits were placed in the heavens: “seven phantoms of flame;” seven demons “of the ignited spheres ;” forming an exact counterpart to the seven gods of the planets…”

Here we see that these seven demons were heavenly and were the “exact counterpart” of the seven gods of the planets. Before we proceed any further, it is important for us to review something mentioned in Gates of the Necronomicon by Simon, page 110:

“The seven stars of the Northern Dipper each have their own, spiritual, analogue in Shangqing Daoism. These may be likened to the seven chakras of kundalini yoga, and to the seven Gates of the Necronomicon. Indeed, just as the Gates of the Necronomicon each have a planetary analogue, so do the seven stars of the Northern Dipper. The five planets and two luminaries familiar to astrologers were believed to be grosser forms of the seven principal stars of the Northern Dipper.”

Simon discusses the Big Dipper at great lengths in Gates of the Necronomicon for the following reason, as found on page 61 in the said work:

“What we in America call the Big Dipper-and in England, the Plough-is really part of a greater constellation called the Ursa Major, or the Great Bear.”

We can see why Simon places importance on the Big Dipper and its role in the Necronomicon rites, as it is also referred to as the Plough in Europe. This means that the Big Dipper is relative to the Arra Sign. Remember what we cited earlier from the Chart of Comparisons:
The Five-pointed grey Star carven The Pentagram The AR, or UB (Plough Sign; the original pentagram and the sign of the Aryan Race)
The Big Dipper is the sign of the Aryan Race, a term that is often misinterpreted for race amongst the human species, while its origin means one who is spiritual, or noble, as discussed in our article on the Arra Sign. Gates of the Necronomicon by Simon clearly indicates that the Gates we walk are the stars of the Big Dipper. Now we see that the Arra Sign is relevant to the Plough Sign, also known as the Big Dipper. In an online article by Jake Stratton-Kent, entitled Star Lore essay, we read the following about the Big Dipper:

http://www.threeworldsweb.com/starlore/jsk.slore.html

“In the Solomonic ‘Black Book’ known as ‘the Testament of Solomon’ the Persian Counterpart of Set – Aeshma-Daeva, known in Demonology as Asmodai or Asmodeus – is also identified with Ursa Major. Deep in antiquity the seven demons of Sumeria (and later Babylonia and Assyria) were identifed with this constellation. Idpa (Fever), Namtar (Magician of the Underworld), Utuk (Spirit), Alal (Destroyer), Gigim (Spirit), Relal (Wicked Demon/Warrior) and lastly Uruku (Larvae). These were the great demons of the Middle East at that time. …These demons were associated with the archetypal seven heads of the Dragon, Ursa Major being conceived as part of the constellation Draco. Apep, the Seven-Headed Dragon of Egypt has been identified with Tiamat, the Great Dragon of Sumeria, slain by Marduk.”

Here we see that the same stars of the Big Dipper, which the seven gates of the Simon Necronomicon represent are known as the seven demons of Sumeria, namely, Idpa (Fever), Namtar (Magician of the Underworld), Utuk (Spirit), Alal (Destroyer), Gigim (Spirit), Telal (Wicked Demon/Warrior) and lastly Uruku (Larvae). There is some key information found in the Simon Necronomicon’s introduction under The Goddess of the Witches:

“Therefore, the Goddess of the Witches has two distinct forms: the Ancient One, Goddess of the Dragon-like telluric Power which is raised in Magickal rituals, and the Elder Goddess, Defeater of Death, who brings the promise of Resurrection and Rejuvenation to her followers those who must reside for a time after death and between incarnations in what is called the “Summerland”.”

Simon here mentions that the Goddess of the Witches is both Dingir Ishtar and Mother-Goddess Tiamat, the Ancient One. Now let us mention a passage that we cited before again:

“And they worship the heaving earth and the ripping sky and the rampant flame and the flooding waters; and they are the raisers of the legions of maskim, the Liers-In-Wait. And they do not know what it is they do, but they do it at the demands of the Serpent,..”

Ishtar represents the astral body and Tiamat would be the “reptile mind” of this finer body, the dragon. Therefore, the “seven heads of the dragon” are the seven gates of the Simon Necronomicon. when we take this into consideration, other passages in the book seems to make more sense:

“..the Dragon or Serpent is said to reside somewhere “below the earth”; it is a powerful force, a magickal force, which is identified with mastery over the created world; it is also a power that can be summoned by the few and not the many.”

Interestingly, Peter Levenda mentions in a  work entitled Stairway To Heaven, page 27, the following information concerning Ishtar:

“It is perhaps worth while to mention here that the planetary body associated with Inanna is Venus, but that she is also associated with the seven stars of the Big Dipper in Ursa Major.”

Based on Levenda’s observation, the Arra Sign, also known as the Plough sign, is connected with both Venus and the seven stars of the Big Dipper. We can determine this by comparing what is written in Kent’s article with Gates of the Necronomicon by Simon:

As we have stated above Ursa Major has a connection with distinctly sinister, that is left-handed, deities. As the Foreleg this constellation was early identified with the Egyptian Deity Set, whose worship was ancient before the Second Empire. At one time Set was a popular deity and had no evil connotations, being the god presiding over the Upper Kingdom as Horus represented the Lower. The ‘Typhonian Animal’, the totem of Set was probably associated with this constellation rather than a bear. The long tail of this beast lends itself to this interpretation at very least for artistic purposes….In the Solomonic ‘Black Book’ known as ‘the Testament of Solomon’ the Persian Counterpart of Set – Aeshma-Daeva, known in Demonology as Asmodai or Asmodeus – is also identified with Ursa Major. Deep in antiquity the seven demons of Sumeria (and later Babylonia and Assyria) were identified with this constellation. Idpa (Fever), Namtar (Magician of the Underworld), Utuk (Spirit), Alal (Destroyer), Gigim (Spirit), Telal (Wicked Demon/Warrior) and lastly Uruku (Larvae). These were the great demons of the Middle East at that time.”

The Seven Atlantean Gods Who Were Later Demoted to the Rank of Demons: The Body of Ishtar

Kent compares the Ursa Major with Set, who compares to the seven evil spirits of ancient Sumeria being; Idpa (Fever), Namtar (Magician of the Underworld), Utuk (Spirit), Alal (Destroyer), Gigim (Spirit), Telal (Wicked Demon/Warrior) and lastly Uruku (Larvae). Now let us note what is written in Gates of the Necronomicon by Simon, page 166:

“In ancient Egypt it was not unusual to worship Set. there were temples to Set all over Upper Egypt; he was an important god until the Osiris cult became popular and Set was relegated to a kind of second-class status. Set, we should remember, is a God of the Dipper, as is Tezcatlipoca; these are “bad guys” of the Egyptian and Aztec religions, respectively. Yet, they are identified with our Place of Origin.”

Simon clearly indicates that Set is the god of the Big Dipper and since Set equates to the seven demons of Sumeria, then these also would find there place in the Big Dipper. we can now understand what is written in the Simon Necronomicon’s Introduction under the subheading Sumeria:

“..Yet, though the identity of the Victor is clear, there were – and are – certain persons and organizations that dared side with the vanquished, believing the Ancient Ones to be a source of tremendous, and most unbelievable, power.”

The Simon Necronomicon identifies these “seven demons” in the Magan Text:

“Falling like rain from the sky..Issuing like mist from the earth..Doors do not stop them..Bolts do not stop them..They glide in at the doors like serpents..They enter by the windows like the wind..IDPA they are, entering by the head..NAMTAR they are, entering by the heart..UTUK they are, entering by the brow..ALAL they are, entering by the chest..GIGIM they are, seizing the bowels..TELAL they are, grasping the hand..URUKU they are, giant Larvae, feeding on the Blood..They are Seven!..Seven are They!..They seize all the towers..From UR to NIPPUR.Yet UR knows them not..Yet NIPPUR does not know them..They have brought down the mighty..Of all the mighty Cities of man..Yet man knows them not..Yes the Cities do not know them..They have struck down the forests of the East..And have flooded the Lands of the West..Yet the East knows them not..Yet the West does not know them..They are a hand grasping at the neck..Yet the neck does not know them..And man knows them not…Their words are Unwrit..Their numbers are Unknown..Their shapes are all Shapes..Their habitations..The desolate places where their Rites are performed..Their habitations..The haunts of man where a sacrifice has been offered..Their habitations..The lands here..And cities here..And the lands between the lands..The cities between the cities..In spaces no man has ever walked..In KURNUDE…The country from whence no traveller returns…At EKURBAD..In the altar of the Temple of the Dead..And at GI UMUNA…At their Mother’s breast..At the Foundations of CHAOS..In the ARALIYA of MUMMU-TIAMAT..And at the Gates…Of IAK SAKKAK!…SPIRIT OF THE AIR, REMEMBER!..SPIRIT OF THE EARTH, REMEMBER!”

Although the above cited passage appears to describe these forces in the essence of dark poetry, they enter the aspects of the chakras through the Gate-Walking rite of Initiation, and as we shall shortly see these “seven” were,  and are, more powerful than the Elder Gods. This is mentioned in an earlier passage that appears in the Magan Text:

“THEY ARE GHOULS..The spirit of the harlot that hath died in the streets. The spirit of the woman that hath died in childbirth..The spirit of the woman that hath dies, weeping with a babe at the breast. The spirit of an evil man..One that haunteth the streets..Or one that haunteth the bed…They are Seven!..Seven are they!..Those Seven were born in the Mountains of MASHU..Called Magick. They dwell within the Caverns of the Earth..Amid the desolate places of the Earth they live..Amid the places between..The Places..Unknown in heaven and in earth..They are arrayed in terror..Among the Elder Gods there is no knowledge of them..They have no name..Not in heaven..Nor on earth..They ride over the Mountain of Sunset..And on the Mountain of Dawn they cry…Through the Caverns of the Earth they creep..Amid the desolate places of the Earth they lie..No where are they known..Not in heaven..Nor in the Earth..Are they discovered..For their place is outside our place..And between the angles of the Earth..They lie in wait..Crouching for the Sacrifice..THEY ARE THEY CHILDREN OF THE UNDERWORLD.”

These “ghouls” are relative to the Jinn and since the sign of the Arra is defined as ‘our race beyond the stars,’ it is reflective of those who are of Jinn-human lineage. Before we go any further, let us take a deeper look at these “seven” as their strength goes even beyond the Elder Gods:

“Among the Elder Gods there is no knowledge of them”

Daniel T Potts in his classic work Mesopotamian Civilization, makes the following observation on page 226:

“For the protection of the living the the spirits of the dead should never leave the underworld. Even the deities inhabiting it could only leave if another took their place…In fact the only beings who moved freely between the worlds of the living and the dead were demons, powers outside the system of order who were adrogenous and the enemies of humans, without families and moral conscious, beings ‘who could not distinguish good from evil’…”

Based on the information cited above, we see that these “demons” possessed powers that even the gods didn’t have. They had the ability to move freely in and out of the Underworld. This seems to indicate that these forces were not necessarily “demons,” but gods of older civilizations that were demoted over time, as the case was with Set. Francois Lenormant writes about this on page 177 of Chaldean Magic:

“There are some nations, like the Pelasgic races, who worship the gods of the abyss, in their connection with the fertility of the soil and agricultural products. There are others, and these are the Finnish, Turkish, Mongolic, and Tungusic races, who worship them from a different point of view, since they do pay homage to the splendours of a metallic world, connecting this adoration with the magic worship of talismanic superstitions.”

It is interesting that the workings of the Simon Necronomicon also consist of the making of talismans, representing the gates, from various metals, as it mentions in the Book of Calling:

“..for the most radiant jewels are to be found buried deep in the Earth, and the Tomb of Man is the Splendour of ERESHKIGAL, the joy of KUTULU, the food of AZAG-THOTH.”

Lenormant continues on page 178:

“The demons issuing forth from the lower abyss had, like the sorcerers who held intercourse with them, a particular preference for the darkeness in which they originated. “

While some may question the motive of these “sorcerers of darkness,” they fail to take into consideration that these ancient Necronomicon practitioners proceeded what would later called the ancient Babylonian religion. The Mad Arab discusses this in the Magan Text:

THE verses here following come from the secret text of some of the priests of a cult which is all that is left of the Old Faith that existed before Babylon was built, ..”

Simon hints on this throughout several passages in the tome’s Introduction:

“Indeed, Crowley had nothing but admiration for the Shaitan (Satan) of the so-called “devil-worshipping” cult of the Yezidis of Mesopotamia, knowledge of which led him to declare the lines that open this Introduction. For he saw that the Yezidis possess a Great Secret and a Great Tradition that extends far back into time, beyond the origin of the Sun cults of Osiris, Mithra and Christ; even before the formation of the Judaic religion, and the Hebrew tongue. Crowley harkened back to a time before the Moon was worshipped, to the “Shadow Out of Time”; and in this, whether he realised it as such or not, he had heard the “Call of Cthulhu”….The religion of the ancient Sumerian peoples seems to have been lunar-oriented, a religion – or religio-magickal structure – of the night, of darkness in a sense. “

The information cited above reveals that the working of the Simon Necronomicon are of a “dark current.” This was also the case for the religions that preceded the ancient Babylonian pantheon. Ancient people risked their lives to preserve a faith that was deemed “evil,” in a way similar to how the Catholic Church “demonized” the religion of the Native American people. The Central Law Journal in 1903, mentions the following concerning the Hammurabi Law Code of ancient Babylonia:

“The punishments inflicted were severe. Death was the penalty for witchcraft or false oath in capital cases, or for robbing a temple of royal possessions.”

So different from popular opinion, the workings and practices of the Necronomicon Tradition would have been outlawed in ancient Babylonia and Sumeria. This explains why the Mad Arab speaks in a certain coded language throughout the entire tome. We can see this in the identity of the Watcher. here is an excerpt from the Atlantean Necronomicon, comparing the same thing http://warlockasyluminternationalnews.com/2010/06/15/excerpt-from-the-atlantean-necronomicon-kutulu/:

“While the Simon Necronomicon mentions Nar Mattaru in various parts of the text, there are two passages specifically that reveal the work of KUTULU in the Necronomicon Tradition. Both of these passages can be found in the section entitled, THE CONJURATION OF THE WATCHER:

“And the Lord of the Watchers dwells, it is said, among the Wastes of the IGIGI, and only Watches and never raises the Sword or fights the idimmi, save when the Covenant is invoked by none less than the Elder Gods in their Council, like unto the Seven Glorious APHKHALLU.”

Following this is the INVOCATION OF THE WATCHER where we read:

“Rise up, from the old Abyss of NARR MARRATU!”

Many of the qualities attributed to the Watcher in the Simon Necronomicon are possessed by KUTULU. A few examples of this can be seen in the following passages:

“I conjure Thee by…The Veils of Sunken Varloormi” (taken from the Normal Invocation of The Watcher as found on page 72 of the SN)

“KUTULU raises his head and stares up through the Veils of sunken Varloormi..,” (taken from the First Testimony of the Mad Arab found on page 15 of the SN)

“the Watcher appears. with eyes that never lose their stare.” (taken from the SN page 70)

“KUTULU raises his head.., up through the Abyss, and fixes his stare upon me” (taken from the SN page 15)

One of the first lines in the Normal Invocation of the Watcher as found on page 72 of the SN is: “I conjur Thee by the Fire of GIRRA”

I deliver you to GIRRA .., Lord of the Flames.., of whom even mighty KUTULU has fear! (taken from page 83 of the MAKLU TEXT as found in the SN)

“And  the Watcher sometimes appears..,aloft holding the Sword of Flames, and even the Elder Gods are awed thereby” (Taken from page 70 of the SN)

the corpse KUTULU shakes beneath the Earth, and our Master ENKI is sore afraid.” (taken from page 186 of the SN)

“And the Lord of the Watchers dwells, it is said among the wastes of the IGIGI…” (Taken from page 70 of the SN)

We can safely assume that KUTULU is the Watcher. The Mad Arab states that ‘the Lord of the Watchers dwells in the Wastes of the IGIGI. The IGIGI are the azonei, also known as the realm of fixed stars. Lovecraft also describes the Old Ones as coming from the regions of Outer Space. The Mad Arab mentions that the Lord of the Watchers “never raises the Sword or fights the idimmi, save when the Covenant is invoked by none less than the Elder Gods in their Council, like unto the Seven Glorious APHKHALLU.”

It is clearly evident that the Watcher is connected with Kutulu. Later, in the Urilia Text we find what Kutulu really is:

“the Ancient Worm, TIAMAT, the ABYSS, also called KUTULU “

Looking at the above passage and how Kutulu is an aspect of Tiamat, and that Kutulu is also the Watcher, clarity about other quotes in the Necronomicon become clearer:

“And they worship the heaving earth and the ripping sky and the rampant flame and the flooding waters; and they are the raisers of the legions of maskim, the Liers-In-Wait. And they do not know what it is they do, but they do it at the demands of the Serpent, ..”

The fact that these are working of the Underworld is clear from two passages in the Simon Necronomicon:

For this is the Book of the Dead, the Book of the Black Earth, that I have writ down at the peril of my life, exactly as I received it, on the planes of the IGIGI, the cruel celestial spirits from beyond the Wanderers of the Wastes.”

The Mad Arab gives his book the working title of “the Book of the Black Earth.” What the Black Earth is, is revealed for us in the Magan Text:

“ISHTAR, Daughter of SIN, she set forth..To the Black Earth, the Land of CUTHA..She set forth..To the House of No Return she set her foot..”

Simply put the Necronomicon Tradition is an ancient rite that precedes the Babylonian religion, as most chthonic religions do. The Necronomicon Practitioner’s work heavily with the chthonic rites simply by calling the Watcher. This is not an evil work, in the true sense of the term. It is a practice that has been shunned by mainstream society for thousands of years. Why were these practices shunned in ancient Mesopotamia is mentioned in several passages appearing in the words of the Mad Arab:

“..for they are not born as men, but in some other fashion; by some corruption of seed or spirit that has given them other properties than those we are familiar with…”

This passage compares greatly with what is mention concerning Ishtar:

“BUT KNOW THAT INANNA TAKES HER OWN FOR HER OWN, AND THAT ONCE CHOSEN BY HER NO MAN MAY TAKE ANOTHER BRIDE.”

In these two passages we see a form of intercourse between divine forces and human beings. There are many tales throughout the Arab world of humans having intimate relations with the Jinn. A Dictionary of Islam by Thomas Patrick Hughes, B.D., M.R.A.S., states the following concerning the Jinn:

“The Jinn, it has been already shown, are peaceable. They also eat and drink, and propagate their species, sometimes in conjunction with human beings; in which latter case, the offspring partakes of the nature of both parents.”

In the book Semitic Magic; Its Origins and Development by R. C. Thompson, speaks heavily about the origins of certain cultural and spiritual taboos that were placed upon certain practices based on the fear of what the “divine” lovers might do to protect their human mates:

“2) The relations between spirits and human beings were so close that both semi-divine and semi-demoniac offspring could be born of intermarriage between them, either of human mothers or fathers. (3) From this belief in intermarriage with spirits arose the tabus on certain sexual functions. These (according to the present theory) indicate the advent, proximity, or presence of marriageable demons who would tolerate no meddling in their amours.”

Notice what is mentioned as Thompson continues on pages 68 and 70:

“That Jinn can intermarry with human beings is a well attested belief of the Arabs. Such folk are always solitary….Sayce quotes as an instance that ” about fifteen years ago there was a man in Cairo who was unmarried, but had an invisible ginna as wife. One day, however, he saw a woman and loved her, and two days later he died. It should be added that in Egypt, where early marriages are the rule, bachelors who have reached the prime of life are believed to be married to ‘afarit or ginn.” Another case, mentioned by Baldensperger, was that of an epileptic servant who maintained that a female jinni was in love with him, and used to strike him half dead to the ground. At Mosul there was the same tradition, and I met with it while discussing Jinn and kindred subjects on the mound of Nineveh one evening, when incidentally (and entirely spontaneously) one of the men, Yakub, told me that he knew a man in Mosul who declared that he was visited at nights by a spirit in the form of a beautiful woman, who had already borne him three children, and he was so pleased with this menage that he scorned a conventional marriage…Rabbinic literature is full of the doings of Lilith, who bore to Adam devils, spirits, and lilin (the Assyrian lilu).”Whoever slept alone in a room was likely to be beset by her. 1 The Eabbis believed, too, that a man might have children by allying himself with a demon, and although they might not be visible to human beings, yet when that man was dying they would hover round his bed, to hail him as their father. At the funeral of a bachelor the Jews of Kurdistan cast sand before the coffin to blind the eyes of the unbegotten children of the deceased. Similarly, the Assyrian demon alii owes its parentage to a human being. Bar Shalmon, the legendary son-in-law of Asmodeus, the demon, after marrying his daughter, a princess, becomes the father of a son by her, but deserts her. The princess then pretends to renounce him, but begs a final kiss, which kills him. Another demon of the same kind named Ornias is described as saying (in the Testament of Solomon) : “Those who are consumed with desire for noble virgins upon earth. . . these I strangle. But in case there is no disposition to sleep, I am changed into three forms. Whenever men come to be enamoured of women, I metamorphose myself into a comely female, and I take hold of the men in their sleep and play with them.”

From the passages cited above, we can see that many spiritual taboos placed on certain practices were done to prevent the intercourse between spirits and humans. The tribal leaders feared that a spirit wed with a human might strike another human, or cause bad luck to the tribe if the spirit was made jealous, or if someone offended his/her human spouse. The Necronomicon Tradition calls for such intercourse as the Initiate calls the Watcher. Notice how Thompson mentions that those who are married to a Genie are often times loners.

“That Jinn can intermarry with human beings is a well attested belief of the Arabs. Such folk are always solitary….”

This coincides with the Mad Arab’s words after his first experience in the Mountains of Masshu, showing his marriage to a Genie:

“Henceforth, from that fateful night in the Mountains of MASSHU, I wandered about the country-side in search of the key to the secret knowledge that had been given me. And it was a painful and lonely journey, during which time I took no wife,..”

notice that out of all the things that could be listed in the Book of Calling, the Mad Arab only finds it necessary to list a few things, and more importantly the following:

“These things you will learn in the course of your journey, and it is not necessary to put it all down here, save for a few noble formulae concerning the works of the Sphere of LIBAT, of ISHTAR, the Queen.”

Although these rites are perceived as simple love spells, if one is aware of the Sacred Marriage Rite, which is the tantric rite of an ancient King’s marriage to DinGir Ishtar, also known as marriage between a Jinn and a human. In an online Islamic, located at the following site; http://islamicarticles.wordpress.com/jinn/, gives us the following example:

“Another person used to study in Riyadh, and a young jinni girl used to come to him to memorize Koran. So she used to sit behind him, and he would give her coffee, so she would take the coffee from him and drink it. “

While this article takes an Islamic perspective on Jinn-human relations, it does reveal that a Jinn spouse is usually seen as standing behind their human lover from a shamanistic eye. With this information we can determine yet another passage rendered by the Mad Arab:

“And the Sign of Xastur rises up behind me, and of that I know the meaning, but may not write, for I received the message Elsewhere.”

The Mad Arab describes Xastur in the Urilia Text:

“And XASTUR is a foul demoness who slays Men in their Sleep, and devours that which she will. And of her no more may be said, for it is unlawful; but know that the worshippers of TIAMAT know her well, and that she is beloved of the Ancient Ones.”

The Mad Arab’s description of Xastur is identical to a certain classes of Jinn. now if we relate this to what is mentioned in Semitic Magic, we find an exact match to what is mentioned by the Mad Arab:

“Sayce quotes as an instance that ” about fifteen years ago there was a man in Cairo who was unmarried, but had an invisible ginna as wife. One day, however, he saw a woman and loved her, and two days later he died. “

Marriages between Jinn and human have existed for thousands of years in many Islamic countries there are laws to govern such. A History of the Inquisition of Spain, Volume 3 by Henry Charles Lea, recounts the following on page 384:

“Liaisons of this kind would be entered into with demons, and would be maintained with the utmost fidelity on both sides for thirty to forty years; and the connection thus established was proof against all the ordinary arts of the exorciser. Alvaro Pelayo relates that in a nunnery under his direction it prevailed among the nuns, and he was utterly powerless to stop it. In fact, it was peculiarly frequent in such pious establishments.”

The Influence of Animism on Islam, by S. M. Zwerner, page 135 states:

“Some authorities hold that they are counted among them and others will not accept the testimony of those who claim to see them. Special sections are also devoted in books of Moslem law regarding marriage of Jinn with human beings and their rights of inheritance!”

The idea of shunning interracial marriages started with the human prejudice of certain religious tribal leaders, both political and religious, out of fear that the Jinn spouse gave to their lover. These marriages were completely monogamous on both sides. These tribal leaders created a paradigm whereby the Ancient rites were made to appear evil, as these human magicians sought to have power of the people and reduce the lot of independent spirituality. However, history reveals that not all Jinn-Human relations are negative The Islamic Traditions of Cirebon by Abdul Ghoffir Muhaimin, mentions the following on page 47:

“Some people suggest the possibility of co-operation between humans and jinn for special purposes such as making friends, even marrying jinn and taking jinn as servants, in the case of benevolent jinn. This is possible for anyone who masters the mystery of Jinn..”

With this is mind we can see why the Mad Arab states the following in his Second Testimony as the Jinn is an Islamic term to define those who are made of a smokeless fire:

“Remember the ARRA, especially when dealing with Them of Fire, for They respect it, and no other.”

Thousands of years ago Initiates of the Necronomicon Tradition were misunderstood by the ancient Babylonians and those who followed them. Today we find the same in modern versions of the Necronomicon Tradition. Simon mentions the following in Book of Black Earth’s introduction:

In the West, the conjuration, cultivation, or worship of this Power was strenuously opposes with the advent of the Solar, Monotheistic religions and those who clung to the Old Ways were effectively extinguished. The wholesale slaughter of those called “Witches” during the Inquisition is an example of this, as well as the solemn and twisted – that is to say, purposeless and unenlightened – celibacy that the Church espoused. For the orgone of Wilhelm Reich is just as much Leviathan as the Kundalini of Tantrick adepts, and the Power raised by the Witches. It has always, at least in the past two thousand years, been associated with occultism and essentially with Rites of Evil Magick, or the Forbidden Magick, of the Enemy, and of Satan . . .. . . and the twisting, sacred Spiral formed by the Serpent of the Caduceus, and by the spinning of the galaxies, is also the same Leviathan as the Spiral of the biologists’ Code of Life : DNA”

"Remember the ARRA, especially when dealing with Them of Fire, for They respect it, and no other." Welcome to the Necronomicon Tradition

In closing, I thought it would be good to mention two quotes from classic work entitled, The Magician: His Training and Work, by W.E. Butler, page 29:

“The ignorant man gazeth upon the face of Nature, and it is to him darkness of darkness. but the initiated and illumined man gazeth thereon and seeth the features of God.”
