Interview With Mysterious Leroy: The Art of Santa Muerte Devotion

In recent years, many media sources have been cited as having observed Santa Muerte devotion as the fastest growing spiritual movement in the world. There is a great beauty to all of this as many people from different walks of life have benefited greatly from their personal relationship with the Divine Lady. Some in the community of the Santa Muerte tradition have started YouTube channels to help educate others, curb discrimination that often comes with the path, and build a catalog of material that can be useful to newcomers and  veteran devotees alike. Mysterious Leroy has created a YouTube channel with the aforementioned intent. His platform brings honor and grace to the Santa Muerte tradition.

Recently, I had the honor of communicating with Mysterious Leroy and during our dialogue, Mysterious Leroy provided some wonderful insights into Santa Muerte devotion. We also get to see a little behind the veil of Leroy’s mysterious aura nd demeanor. I’m sure you will enjoy the wisdom of his words.

Warlock Asylum: Before we begin, I would like to thank you once again for taking the time out of your schedule to answer a few questions. The work you have put into the tradition of Santa Muerte devotion is certainly a blessing and is appreciated by many of us in the community. However, for some of our readers, who may not be familiar with your work, please introduce yourself. Who is Mysterious Leroy?

Mysterious Leroy: Hello, and thank you for choosing to have me answer some questions, I’m quite flattered as I own one of your books and I never imagined you’d be interviewing me, yet here we are! My name is, as many may guess, Leroy, and Mysterious Leroy is the name of my YouTube channel. Before that the channel was actually called Mr Demonology, back before most people can remember. I create content primarily regarding La Santa Muerte, and I try to share information that devotees would find useful as they walk along the path of the most Holy Death. I do create meditation music for her various aspects, as well as content relating to tarot and divination. In the past I would have considered myself an armchair occultist, but I’ve long since taken the plunge into a more hands on approach to spirituality and magick which has led me to where I am today, a proud devotee of Santa Muerte.

Warlock Asylum: What was life like for you during your formative years?

Mysterious Leroy: My formative years were tumultuous and a melting pot of traumas and abuses, and the details are far too sad to dredge up here and now. My entire upbringing was worse than most people could imagine, but it did teach me how to survive, and how to cultivate deep inner strength. Interestingly, as far back as I can remember I was always obsessed with the occult, mythology, and the paranormal, and I started trying to teach myself tarot and runes before I was a teenager. I remember being in middle school reading about The Picatrix, and the Lemegton, not that I really comprehended any of it at that time. I had a demonology phase in the eighth grade followed by one where I studied angelic choirs and the hosts.

Warlock Asylum: Santa Muerte means many things to many different people. What does Santa Muerte mean to you?

Mysterious Leroy:That’s really a loaded question! Where could I start? I suppose I would have to say that in my mind I consider Santa Muerte to be a comforting force of nature. To me she is safety and protection in this world and the next. She is the promise of support in all the good I try to do in this world, and she is the one who pushes me to be a better person every day. She is a goddess, a deity, and still so much more, she is a stable source of peace in the lives of so many, and she is an embrace at the end of a long day. She is like a mother, and is a guide and teacher of life. She is so much to try and capture in mere words, and my respect towards her is immeasurable and staggering. She really is just amazing.

Warlock Asylum: How did Santa Muerte call you? Were you reared in the tradition of devotion or did you discover the path through some other means?

Mysterious Leroy: I certainly was not raised in the tradition of Santa Muerte devotion, although funny enough I did actually collect Santa Muerte candles in my early twenties and even owned a beautiful statue of the black Santa Muerte on a white horse before I even knew who she was. In retrospect I think she was drawing me to her, or making her presence known in different ways back then. The grandmother of someone I was close to came forth and arranged for me to basically create a small altar to La Santa Muerte. It was through her expert guidance that I gained a foothold into Santa Muerte devotion, and basically what started me on this path that I still walk today.

Warlock Asylum: What are some of the lessons that you have learned since exercising Santa Muerte devotion?

Mysterious Leroy: The lessons I’ve learned from being a devotee have been too many too count, and I’m embarrassed to say that some of the lessons took me a few tries to learn, like letting go of people from the past, especially when I’ve outgrown them or when they were important to me initially but turned out to be a kind of obstacle to my personal growth. I learned about the value of hard work, of not being lazy and of not wasting precious time. She taught me about divine timing and the lesson of patience, how some things cannot be rushed, although admittedly I still struggle with being patient. My faith never really wavers though. She taught me the value of spiritual hygiene as well, cleansing and banishing, especially after run ins with astral parasites and the like. I could speak at length about lessons she’s taught me, there are so many.

Warlock Asylum: Mysterious Leroy is widely known for his YouTube series on the subject of Santa Muerte. One of the things that makes your show different than other video channels that educate others about her honor is the amazing artwork of Santa Muerte amid your narration. It’s almost as if the artwork came before the YouTube series. What inspired you to create a YouTube series on Santa Muerte?

Mysterious Leroy: Would you consider me widely known for my YouTube series? I always considered my platform to be rather small and hidden away. I was inspired to create my videos on Santa Muerte after I started accumulating massive amounts of personal gnosis through lengthy channeling sessions at my altar. The artwork definitely came later, as many of my earlier videos contain no such art. I try to be very particular about every piece of artwork I use. I like to think I have a very specific creative vision.

Warlock Asylum: What are the origins of the artwork appearing on your YouTube series?

Mysterious Leroy: The Art I use throughout my channel these days, and for some time now, is made almost entirely through an a.i. Art generating program called mid journey. It renders gorgeous and detailed artwork, but even still I find myself coloring over them at times, as I cannot always create the art I want through that program alone. I often paint digitally or recolor some of the images, and I may spend hours collaging multiple images together to create something new. I do eventually hope to post all of the images for everyone to access on a webpage one day, but that’s low priority for me at this time. People seem to really like a lot of the images, and honestly they’re fun to create and then alter.

Warlock Asylum: In what ways have your personal relationships change amid your work as a devotee of Santa Muerte?

Mysterious Leroy: My personal relationships have almost not changed at all since becoming a devotee I’d say. I’ve never been someone with a large social group and I tend to be more solitary in general. A few toxic friendships have fallen away, and a few good relationships have gotten stronger, due to Santa Muerte’s guidance and extremely helpful advice in situations where perhaps I was not seeing things from the perspective of others.

Warlock Aslyum: Tell us about the well-crafted and illustrious art appear in your YouTube videos? Who is the artist, or artists, behind these illustrations and how are they developed?

Mysterious Leroy: They were basically created through the mid journey program, which in general is free and available to everyone through discord. Although I do draw and paint I find these images to be a bit more striking and eye catching.

Warlock Asylum: What advice would you give to those that are newly interested in Santa Muerte?

Mysterious Leroy:My advice to those who are new to Santa Muerte would be this: don’t shop around searching for the person presenting you with the most easiest and convenient way to devote. There are different ways people work with Santisima Muerte and ultimately you’ll find your way for yourself, but remember there is tradition here, and in tried and true methods there is power. Make discernment your best friend, and don’t get all of your Santa Muerte information from one person or from one source. Read all the books, the blogs and websites, watch all the videos on all the platforms, listen to different devotees and you’ll learn far more about the path than if you stuck to just one practicioner or just one book.

Warlock Asylum: It is my understanding that you also have an Etsy store. What are some of the items that you offer at the Etsy store?

Mysterious Leroy: Yes, my Etsy store sells a few medium sized Art prints and a few very large Art prints, mostly of Santa Muerte, and Jesus Malverde, but a few others as well. I sell a few t shirts, candles, small notebooks, and a handful of digital book of shadows pages relating to La Santa Muerte. There is something I’m currently working on that I’ll be selling in my shop soon, that I think any one who like my content will immediately gravitate towards, it’s something ambitious but that’s all I’ll say for now. Hopefully it will be out soon!

Warlock Asylum: Where  do you see Mysterious Leroy in the five years? Any final thoughts?

Mysterious Leroy: I feel that aside from continue working on my self growth my plans in the long term continue to change and adapt to fit my expanding worldviews. My YouTube channel is important to me, but eventually having a presence on multiple platforms would be ideal as it can allow me to reach more people and perhaps spread more awareness and kindness in the world. I will always make Santa Muerte content, but I also would love to make content that deals with self-growth and self-development, overcoming internal blocks, escaping the victim mindset, erasing limiting beliefs, and rising above trauma and negative patterns of behavior. I think of myself not as just a YouTuber but maybe more as a person who just wants to aid in others in their spiritual paths and beyond. I want to thank you again for having me for this interview, and for allowing me to speak and share a little bit about myself and my content.
