Obituary of the MetroCard: 1994 to December 31st, 2025

The New York City MetroCard has been a symbol of the city’s hustle and bustle for decades, swiped and tapped by millions as they navigate the sprawling New York City Subway system. Introduced in the early 1990s, the MetroCard revolutionized transit by replacing tokens and making commuting more convenient for everyone. But now, an exciting new chapter is unfolding for NYC riders: the MTA is rolling out OMNY, a contactless fare payment system that promises to make getting around even easier!

OMNY—short for “One Metro New York”—is transforming how we access public transportation. Forget about fishing through your wallet or bag for a yellow-and-blue card; with OMNY, you simply tap your smartphone, bank card, or OMNY card at the turnstile and go! This modern upgrade not only speeds up entry but also keeps things cleaner and safer—a huge plus in today’s world.

Recently, it was announced on the MTA’s website that the MetroCard will no longer be supported after December 31st, 2025.  OMNY will usher in a new era of convenience across all MTA services. Whether you’re a daily commuter or an occasional visitor to New York City Subway stations, this seamless technology means less hassle and more time enjoying everything NYC has to offer. The future of city transit is here—and it’s just a tap away!
