It’s been a little while since I’ve gotten a chance to muster up an article here at the GateWalker’s Page. If this is your first time visiting here, we have quite a few articles listed to the right of this Page that I am sure you will find useful in your search. I must give a big thanks to Warlock Asylum, for inviting me here as a writer. Today, we will be discussing one of the most complicated sections of the Simon Necronomicon Gate-Walking Tradition- The Urilla Text.
Before going further into our discussion, I must say that I was amazed at some of the simple definitions that one may find under the word “Urilla.”
“In American, the name Urilla means- god is my light. The name Urilla orginated as an American name. The name Urilla is a unisex name and can be used for a boy or girl name (male or female).”
“Possibly a French feminine form of Hebrew , meaning “flame of Jehovah” or “God is my light.”
The Celestial Scriptures by C. M. Houck states the following on page 317:
“The Chaldean word Ur means “light” and/or “fire.”..,
Interestingly, Houck mentions the following in a prior passage that is found also on page 317:
“It should be remembered that Taurus was widely known as the “Bull of Light”
I found this passage to be an interesting one, being that we are discussing the Urilla Text. Now that we understand the meaning to the term UR as light or fire, let us look further into the term illa.
The term Illa is a derivative of the Akkadian word ila, which means Goddess. This would mean that the term Urilla could be defined as ‘light/fire of the Goddess.” The Urilla Text is the capstone of the GateWalker’s Path, though it has been often misunderstood and perceived as harmful. This is due to the misuse of the rituals that are laid down in the text. The first thing that is somewhat of a safety trap is that the rituals and entities within the Urilla Text are not to be called until one has walked the Gate of Self, or the Gate of Tiamat. Notice the concluding words of the Gate Incantation found on page 185:
I AM before all things.

It is quite ironic that many involved with the Simon Necronomicon workings do not fully understand what they are doing. The Gates are connected to the Ursa Major, or the Big Dipper. In an online article entitled Stellar Lore Essay by Jake Stratton-Kent, which can be found here http://threeworldsweb.com/starlore/jsk.slore.html we read the following:
“As we have stated above Ursa Major has a connection with distinctly sinister, that is left-handed, deities. As the Foreleg this constellation was early identified with the Egyptian Deity Set, whose worship was ancient before the Second Empire. At one time Set was a popular deity and had no evil connotations, being the god presiding over the Upper Kingdom as Horus represented the Lower. The ‘Typhonian Animal’, the totem of Set was probably associated with this constellation rather than a bear. The long tail of this beast lends itself to this interpretation at very least for artistic purposes. diagram omitted, Typhonian Animal overlaid on Ursa Major]
In the Solomonic ‘Black Book’ known as ‘the Testament of Solomon’ the Persian Counterpart of Set – Aeshma-Daeva, known in Demonology as Asmodai or Asmodeus – is also identified with Ursa Major. Deep in antiquity the seven demons of Sumeria (and later Babylonia and Assyria) were identifed with this constellation. Idpa (Fever), Namtar (Magician of the Underworld), Utuk (Spirit), Alal (Destroyer), Gigim (Spirit), Relal (Wicked Demon/Warrior) and lastly Uruku (Larvae). These were the great demons of the Middle East at that time.
These demons were associated with the archetypal seven heads of the Dragon, Ursa Major being conceived as part of the constellation Draco. Apep, the Seven-Headed Dragon of Egypt has been identified with Tiamat, the Great Dragon of Sumeria, slain by Marduk. This primordial goddess is the prototype of the biblical monster Leviathan. It is little known that in the Book of Revelation this same Dragon makes an anonymous guest appearance. Nowhere in biblical literature, apart from Revelation where the Dragon is not named, is Leviathan described as seven-headed. But in Ugaritic tablets this identification is plainly made. Much of the later Biblical literature finds its prototype in Ugarit and is considerably amplified by the Ugaritic texts. Tiamat or Leviathan was an early biblical image for ‘the wicked city’ so it is apt that ‘the Whore of Babylon’ should ride a seven-headed dragon in the Book of Revelation. “
The stars of the Ursa Major represented some of the same forces in the Urilla Text. We perform our rituals in the same direction that we find the Ursa Major. Notice what is said in the Magan Text
Namtar (Magician of the Underworld) = NEBO Gate
, Utuk (Spirit), = ISHTAR Gate
Alal (Destroyer) SHAMMASH Gate
, Gigim (Spirit) = NERGAL Gate
, Relal (Wicked Demon/Warrior) MARDUK Gate
Uruku (Larvae). ADAR Gate
Here it mentions these that Seven who were born in the Mountains of MASSHU. The Mountains of MASSHU is where the Mad Arab received the Three Seals, also known as the Arra, Agga, and Bandar. From the description in the above passage these Seven must also be the Seven Demons mentioned in the Book of Calling. The Magan Text continues:
“Know that our years are the years of War
And our days are measured as battles
And every hour is a Life
Lost to the Outside
Those from Without
Have builded up charnel houses
To nourish the fiends of TIAMAT
And the Blood of the weakest here
Is libation unto TIAMAT
Queen of the Ghouls
Wreaker of Pain
And to invoke her
The Red Water of Life
Need be split on a stone
The stone struck with a sword
That hath slain eleven men
Sacrifices to HUBUR
So that the Strike ringeth out
And call TIAMAT from Her slumber”
Interestingly, Simon has this to say in his Introduction:
“How can one be true to the Necronomicon tradition if they do not work with the Tiamat force, or force of telluric power? One should keep in mind that the workings in the Urilla Text are not necessarily destructive. There is nothing wrong with just working with the Tiamat energy. The Calling that is mentioned in the onset of the Urilla Text is useful in summoning any entity we would like to work with. Once we go beyond Adar, we must adjust our Calling Rituals, and the Urilla Text makes a way for us to do that. Yet we should also realize that the setup that is laid out in the Book of Namtar or the Book of Calling is useful to summon any sort of deity. ,…Therefore, the Goddess of the Witches has two distinct forms: the Ancient One, Goddess of the Dragon-like telluric Power which is raised in Magickal rituals, and the Elder Goddess, Defeater of Death, who brings the promise of Resurrection and Rejuvenation to her followers those who must reside for a time after death and between incarnations in what is called the “Summerland”.
“From the Blood of KINGU he fashioned Man.
He constructed Watchtowers for the Elder Gods
Fixing their astral bodies as constellations
That they may watch the Gate of ABSU
The Gate of TIAMAT they watch
The Gate of KINGU they oversee
The Gate whose Guardian is IAK SAKKAK they bind.
All the Elder Powers resist
The Force of Ancient Artistry
The Magick Spell of the Oldest Ones
The Incantation of the Primal Power
The Mountain KUR, the Serpent God
The Mountain MASHU, that of Magick
The Dead KUTULU, Dead but Dreaming
TIAMAT, Dead but Dreaming
ABSU, KINGU, Dead but Dreaming
And shall their generation come again?
The Mad Arab mentioned in the above passage that the Gate that leads to the Oustside is watched eternally by the Ancient Ones. With this in mind let us now look back again at some verse in the Magan Text:
“I have found the Gate that leads to the Outside, by which the Ancient Ones, who ever seek entrance to our world, keep eternal watch. I have smelled the vapours of that Ancient One, Queen of the Outside, whose name is writ in the terrible MAGAN text, the testament of some dead civilisation whose priests, seeking power, swing open the dread, evil Gate for an hour past the time, and were consumed.”
The above passage mentions Those from Without have built up places of worship unto Tiamat. This would mean those who are from a Race beyond the Stars, or those of the Arra. Sign. In the book Dead names written by Simon, he mentions that there are “blinds” or “traps” placed in the Simon Necronomicon to protect the system. One of these traps is the good guys versus the bad guys. Those who have done thorough research into the beliefs of people in the region of Mesopotamia, would already know that Tiamat was part of the Chaldean Pantheon. This is mentioned in the book Chaldean Magic. It should also be noted that there were cults that would work with forces that were considered to be beneath the Earth, yet they did not see use of working with forces that would cause them harm. However, some did work with forces that were deemed demonic by latter cults existing in the same area. Many times former deities are considered “demonic” by a conquering group of people. We need to read what the mad Arab is really saying. Notice what he mentions in his Testimony:
The above passage illustrates well that the “Seven Demons of the Ignited Spheres are indeed the Elder Gods.” It is often said in the Simon Necronomicon that we are ‘from a Race beyond the Stars.’ This Race evidently existed in the Ursa Major, who are also described as ‘Those from Without. Let us turn again to the Magan Text with this in mind:
“He who awakens Him calls the ancient
Vengeance of the Elder Ones
The Seven Glorious Gods
of the Seven Glorious Cities
Upon himself and upon the World
And old vengeance . . .”
This passage confirms some of the things that we have pointed out previously on this Blog Page. We see here that Tiamat is mentioned as ‘promising us nevermore to attack.’ This indicates that the battle between Marduk and Tiamat is completely allegorical and does not represent an ancient view of some divine hierarchy, where the good guys versus the bad guy have to do battle. Of course in Ancient Mesopotamia there were indeed forces that appeared as destructive, yet these same forces were commanded by the gods themselves. Notice the next passage that appears in the Magan Text:
“WE ARE FROM A RACE BEYOND THE WANDERERS OF NIGHT.
We have survived the Age when ABSU ruled the Earth
And the Power destroyed out generations.
We have survived on tops of mountains
And beneath the feet of mountains
And have spoken with the Scorpions
In allegiance and were betrayed.
And TIAMAT has promised us nevermore to attack
With water and with wind.
But the Gods are forgetful.
Beneath the Seas of NAR MATTARU
Beneath the Seas of the Earth, NAR MATTARU
Beneath the World lays sleeping”
In the above passage we see that the Seven Demons of the Ignited Spheres are mentioned above exactly in the same placement that Jake Stratton-Kent mentioned earlier in our discussion. Yet is should also be noted that they are mentioned as ruling from Ur to Nippur. This would mean that these “Seven Demons” are also the Elder Gods. Notice what is mentioned in the Magan Text on pages 159-160:
“Falling like rain from the sky
Issuing like mist from the earth
Doors do not stop them
Bolts do not stop them
They glide in at the doors like serpents
They enter by the windows like the wind
IDPA they are, entering by the head
NAMTAR they are, entering by the heart
UTUK they are, entering by the brow
ALAL they are, entering by the chest
GIGIM they are, seizing the bowels
TELAL they are, grasping the hand
URUKU they are, giant Larvae, feeding on the Blood
They are Seven!
Seven are They!
They seize all the towers
From UR to NIPPUR”
“THEY ARE GHOULS
The spirit of the harlot that hath died in the streets
The spirit of the woman that hath died in childbirth
The spirit of the woman that hath dies, weeping with a babe at the breast
The spirit of an evil man
One that haunteth the streets
Or one that haunteth the bed.
They are Seven!
Seven are they!
Those Seven were born in the Mountains of MASHU
In the above passage we read that the Book Of Calling is a working with “Seven Demons of the Ignited Spheres.” This would definitely indicate the Spheres of the Ursa Major. Another interesting tibit is found in the Introduction of the Necronomicon in the Chart of Comparisons section. We read here that the Pentagram or Arra Sign correspond to the Plough, which is another name for the Ursa Major. On page 163 in the Simon Necronomicon, we find these words written in the Magan Text:
“This is further the Book of NAMMTAR, Chief among the Magicians of ERESHKIGAL.
This is the Book of the Seven Demons of the Ignited Spheres, of the Seven Demons of the Flame.
This is the Book of the Priest, who governeth the Works of Fire!”
Let us now look in the Simon Necronomicon to see if there are any passages that support our discussion. On pages 95-95 in the Simon Necronomicon we read the following words:
Idpa (Fever) = NANNA Gate
The above passage indicates that all the rituals in the Simon Necronomicon are directed to Tiamat and the “dragons” that she created. however, she has crowned them with “Halos” so that they can appear as “gods.” This means that the forces that we work with in ritual are portrayed a deities of light, but this is really just an appearance, and when we come to the Urilla Text we can see the Elder “Gods” for who they really are, the Ancient Ones.
“She filled their bodies with venom for blood
Roaring dragons she has clothed with Terror
Has crowned them with Halos, making them as Gods,”
That is an interesting observation. We know as Gate-Walkers that the direction of our rituals is facing northwards, which is facing the Polestar and the Ursa Major. Yet Stratton-Kent mentions something of extreme interests to the Gate-Walkers as he continues:
“The legend of the dragon-slayer refers to the change from Thuban to Polaris. many dragon slayers are in fact named ‘bear’, as Beowulf = Bee- wolf = Bear, and Arthur = Ursa = Bear. Interestingly Arthur’s surname was Pendragon meaning Dragons Head. Other dragon slayers are identified with the constellation Orion, occasionally said to stand on the Dragons Head, although the constellation Hercules more usually receives this dubious honour. Hercules and Orion are major figures in Stellar Lore, being identified with the consorts and co-regents of the Goddess. “
The phenomena of changing Pole Stars is called by astronomers ‘the Precession of the Equinoxes’. The same phenomena causes the zodiacal signs attending the Equinoxes to change every 2000 years. This is the explanation of the cycle of astrological ages, such as the Age of Pisces and the future Age of Aquarius. Aries is traditionally the sign of the Spring Equinox, but in fact precession caused Pisces to usurp this position hundreds of years ago. About a third of the constellation Pisces has to move over the Vernal Equinox point before the much vaunted Age of Aquarius comes to pass.
That Ursa Major is associated with the World centre is not surprising, as the ‘Northern Height’ would represent such an association to any race dwelling in high places in Northern latitudes. But the World Centre was not always identified with Polaris, although some forms of the motif strongly suggest a connection with the theme from early times. Ursa Major and the World Centre motif in mythology predates Ursa Minor’s arrival at the Pole position by many thousands of years. Polaris, the Pole Star, of the constellation Ursa Minor is a comparative newcomer to the ‘Northern Height’. 3000 years BC when Sumerian and Egyptian cultures were already both established the Pole Star was Thuban, the brightest star in the constellation Draco. This celestial dragon winds sinuously around both of the stellar Bears, Major and Minor.
The ancient cult of Ursa Major finds it’s reflection in many cultures, as does the motif of the World Centre – represented by the Pole Star. A fair amount of astronomical knowledge is required to follow the course of the lore of the stars. To enable the student to overcome this obstacle to some extent we write this chapter. Ursa Major and several other non-zodiacal stars and constellations will appear in the course of this section and I shall endeavour to amplify any obscure points as they occur.
When we compare the format of concluding words in other Gate Incantations, we see that words found in the Simon Necronomicon on page 185 are also words of a Gate Incantation. This is why the spirits of the Urilla Text are often reported to act in discord with the Priest/Priestess. We must remember that we cannot summon the spirits of a sphere unless we have walked that Gate.

The word Urilla, sometimes spelled Urillia, in the Simon Necronomicon, is made up of two terms, “Ur” and “illa.” Let us then look into the definition of these terms to get a clearer understanding as to what the term Urilla means in the Necronomicon Tradition.
Despite the “dark overtones” that are usually associated with the Urilla Text, we see from the above definitions something of virtue. However, we must keep in mind that these definitions are relative to European languages and not to those spoken by the people of Ancient Mesopotamia.
