Greetings! This is our fourth discussion concerning the Four Directional Gates, as found in the Simon Necronomicon. if this is your first time visiting I would suggest that you begin your reading by reviewing a list of articles listed to the right of this page. Now let us begin our fourth segment of our discussion by analyzing the South Gate.
Seal of The South Gate
Element= Fire
Color= Red/Orange
Deity= ENKI
Season=Summer
Full Moon
Description of South Gate is given symbolically in the 3rd part of the MAGAN Text entitled Of the Forgotten Generations of Man.
The South gate is guarded by ENKI. In other systems, such as Enochian and Pagan, the South is attributed to Michael. Michael is an archangel who strengthens the spirit during difficult times or dangerous situations. His name means “he who is like God”. Michael is the chief over the dominion order of virtues, angel of repentance, righteousness, ruler of the fourth heaven and conqueror of Satan. He is associated with the element of Fire. The name Michael means who is like God.
This compares greatly to the role of ENKI through out the Necronomicon Tradition. ENKI acted as the strengthening spirit in ISHTAR”S Descent. ENKI was also the intelligence that helped man survive the ‘great flood.’ ENKI played a vital role in the creation of man as well.
ENKI corresponds to the third part of the MAGAN Text, which is entitled Of the Forgotten Generations of Man. This section speaks about the “powers” of Man and what his Magical abilities he has. This is a very interesting correspondence, since ENKI in the South position stands directly opposite KUTULU in the North. The Priest who stands in the center is described in metaphor as MARDUK. Thus, when ENKI raised up his son MARDUK to battle the Dragon, it was a symbolic reference of the Priest who faces many ordeals on his/her path of initiation by invoking the powers of the North Directional deity TIAMAT This is why it mentions the following in the MAGAN Text, as found in the Simon Necronomicon on page 166:
“But Man possesses the Sign/ And the Number/ And the Shape/ To summon the Blood of his Parents/ And this is the Covenant./ Created by the Elder Gods/ From the Blood of the Ancient Ones”
Each gate that the Initiate walks is an aspect of TIAMAT. Further proof of this is revealed in the Introduction of the Simon Necrocomicon. Notice the SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL TO 777
THE CHART that follows is based on research presently available to the Editor with regard to Sumerian and Assyro-Babylonian religions. Entries in parentheses refer to the state of correspondences before the advert of the Elder Gods, the Race of MARDUK; that is, it reflects the nature of the cosmos before the Fall of MARDUK from Heaven. (Names of zodiacal constellations are after Budge’s renderings.)

“And the bowl must be lain between the Circles, facing the NorthEast.”
Additionally, in both Enochian and Pagan correspondences, the North represents Winter and the East represents Spring. Therefore, the NorthEast would represent a period of resurrection. The Northeast position is symbolic of the dead coming back to life. The transition between Winter to Spring, is also a metaphor of the preparation of the Sacred Marriage Rite that occurred in the springtime. Page 123 0f the Simon Necronomicon states the following:
“In the time before time, in the age before the heaven and the earth were put in their places, in the age when the Ancient Ones were rulers of all that existed and did not exist, there was nought but darkness. There was no Moon. There was no Sun. No planets were they, and no stars. No grain, No tree, no plant grew. The Ancient Ones were Masters of Spaces now unknown or forgotten, and all was CHAOS.
MARDUK was chosen of the Elders to fight KUR and wrest power from the Great Sleeping Serpent who dwells beneath the Mountains of the Scorpion. MARDUK was given a weapon, and a Sign, and Fifty Powers were given to him to fight the awful TIAMAT, and each Power has its weapon and its Sign and these are the mightiest possessions of the Elder Gods against the Ancient One who threatens Without, who threatens from the Abyss, the Lord of Darkness, the Master of CHAOS, the Unborn, the Uncreated, who still wishes ill upon the Race of Men, and upon the Elder Gods who reside in the Stars.”
The above quote tells us that when the Ancient Ones were ruling there were no planets or stars. This passage cannot be taken literally because on page 208 0f the Simon Necronomicon it states:
“And there shall forever be War between us and the Race of Draconis, for the Race of Draconis was ever powerful in ancient times, when the first temples were built in MAGAN, and they drew down much strength from the stars, but now they are as Wanderers of the Wastelands, and dwell in caves and in deserts, and in all lonely places where they have set up stones.”
The above quote shows us that the “stars” did actually exist when the Ancient Ones ruled. Therefore, when the Necronomicon states that when the ‘Ancient Ones were ruling nothing existed but darkness,’ this statement is a metaphor meaning that the “stars” had no power over the Priest/Priestess. It represents a time when Man ruled the universe. The ‘Fall of Man’ occurred when the celestial forces overcame Man, and Man became subject to the powers of the “stars” and “planets.” Evidently, Man must have used his power is a perverse way for the Mad Arab tells us in his first Testimony the following:
“I have traveled beneath the Seas, in search of the Palace of Our Master, and found the stone of monuments of vanquished civilisations, and deciphered the writings of some of these; while still others remain mysteries to any man who lives. And these civilisations were destroyed because of the knowledge contained in this book.” It was because of this perverse use of magick that Man fell from awareness and a true knowledge of himself. So a covenant was made whereby, Man could indeed be able to access the powers of the “stars” or the power in himself by battling the energies which have kept him asleep. Further proof of this is revealed on Page 48 of the Simon Necronomicon:
“For this reason, few have ever opened the Gate of ADAR, and spoken to the Horned One who resideth there and giveth all manner of wisdom regarding the operations of necromancy, and of the spells that hasten unto death. Only when thou hast shown thy power over the Maskim and the Rabishu, mayest thou venture forth to the Land of the IGIGI, and for that reason was this Covenant made, that none shall safely Walk through the sunken valleys of the Dead before having ascended to MARDUK, nor shall they breach the Gates that lie beyond ADAR until they have seen the Signs of the Mad God and felt the fury of the hellish Queen.”
Only when the Initiate has conquered his/her own demons will the door unlock to spiritual liberation and one can free themselves from the forces which once made Man a conflicted being in the universal scheme of things. Once initiation occurs the celestial powers of the “stars” that once ruled Man become subject to him. He is no longer a pawn to the celestial cycle of events. This process in mention in the Book Of calling on page 98:
“Know, seventhly, of the Things thou art to expect in the commission of this Most sacred Magick. Study the symbols well, and do not be afraid of any awful spectre that shall invade thine operation, or haunt thine habitat by day or by night. Only charge them with them the words of the Covenant and they will do as you ask, of thou be strong. And if thou performest these operations often, thou shalt see things becoming dark; and the Wanderers in their Spheres shall no more be seen by thee; and the Stars in their places will lose their Light, and the Moon, NANNA, by whom thou also workest, shall become black and extinguished, “
Now let us compare the above passage with what is written concerning the Ancient Ones in the Book Of Fifty Names, as found on page 123 of the Simon Necronomicon:
“In the time before time, in the age before the heaven and the earth were put in their places, in the age when the Ancient Ones were rulers of all that existed and did not exist, there was nought but darkness. There was no Moon. There was no Sun. No planets were they, and no stars. No grain, No tree, no plant grew. The Ancient Ones were Masters of Spaces now unknown or forgotten, and all was CHAOS.”
When comparing the two quotes as shown above, we see that the path of Necromancy and Tantra, as provided for us in the Simon Necronomicon, is a work towards gaining awareness of ourselves and to evolve past the ‘unnoticed’ influences that have kept us victims of outer influences for so long.
ENKI represents the last race of Man that preceded this one. ENKI also corresponds to THOTH, which we have discussed in previous articles. THOTH the Atlantean was one of the few survivors of Atlantis, who took with him the knowledge and secrets of magick, and bestowed them upon those who proved worthy. In like manner, ENKI is the bestower of Life-force or chi. His placement in the South Direction establishes this even further, as the Summer is directly opposed to the Winter. Yet the time of Summer is a time of life and vibrant energy. It is through proper use of this energy that the Initiate is able to evolve into a complete being.
“Invocation of the Southern Gate
Thee I invoke, Angel, Guardian against the URULU Dread City of Death, Gate of No Return!
Do Thou stand at my side!
In the Names of the most Mighty Hosts of MARDUK and ENKI, Lords of the Elder Race, the ARRA, do Thou stand firm
behind me!
Against PAZUZU and HUMWAVA, Fiends of the Southwest Winds, do Thou stand form!
Against the Lords of the Abominations, do Thou stand form!
Be Thou the Eyes behind me,
The Sword behind me,
The Spear behind me,
The Armour behind me.
Be watchful, Spirit of the Southern Ways, and Remember!
Spirit of the South, Remember!”
WARLOCK ASYLUM
After reading this I think my findings on Ninurta being the Deity of the South Gate may be incorrect…
However, in my own discoveries there have been clues that pointed to the same Deity you mention – Enki.
I’m glad I found this article, as it confirms the doubts I was having about my own discoveries. Thanks!
