Whether you love her or hate her, Debbie Schlussel is one of the hardest working writers in America. This native-born Michigan renaissance woman is like the Cybill Shepherd of journalism. Not only is she a blogger, but an attorney, author, movie critic, and political commentator. What I admire the most about Schussel is her fearlessness and sincerity. Schlussel has not sold her soul to the modern-day shuffle of having to be politically correct to please a certain population. Instead, we find someone who freely expresses her concerns about current events. Schlussel’s honest character can be seen in her public statements about Fox News‘ personality, Sean Hannity. Although many misinterpreted her statements about Hannity, Schlussel never sought to take advantage of the situation for her own aims.
My observation of Schlussel’s work comes without prejudice of her opinions and subjects she’s entertained. I have learned quite a few new things reading her blog and some who hold similar opinions. I do, however, strongly disagree with her article – Meet America’s “Moorish” Muslims. While I am not in support of the “Moorish sovereign” groups, I do understand that members of the Moorish Science Temple of America are law-abiding citizens and many of them have died defending American soil. One example of this is Moorish-American Marine Staff Sargent Kendall Damons Waters-Bey, who was one of the first casualties in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Based on my research thus far, a Moorish-American has died defending this nation in more military conflicts since WWII than not. Of course, Crispus Attucks wasn’t around to get a membership card. Nor has any press investigation been effective in revealing that Moorish-Americans do not believe in the “black and white” categorization of people. The Moorish-American population, though largely African-American, also has a history of including Asians, Irish, Italians, and people like Sultan Rafi Sharif-Bey, who was involved in the Moorish Science Temple, came from a Jewish family and formed a Sufi order. Still, we’ll leave that on the shelf for now.
The Debbie Schlussel Blog and Website takes really cool grassroots approach in its design. It is very easy to navigate through. Schlussel has done quite a bit of work in the community and the outline of the website makes it easy for her subscribers to navigate through the information, which is good for sites containing political and social commentaries.
Another amazing feature about the Debbie Schlussel Blog and Website is that it features stories not covered by mainstream media. In some ways this is quite sad. While Debbie Schlussel is a conservative, her reporting honestly gives the reader glimpses of information not popular in the news. This form of journalism is extremely important in understanding the vibe going on around the world and what it spells out. Her work “caused FBI Director Robert Mueller to revoke an award to an American citizen who was a Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terrorist and was involved with a group with Al-Qaeda and Hamas ties (October 2003).”
If you want to get a taste of some of Schlussel’s expert journalism, read her article entitled, Almost a Week Without Power in Detroit: When Your Utility is a Monopoly w No Competition. This is one of my favorite Debbie Schlussel articles where you can really see her personality really shining through the words. People can say what they want to about schlussel’s work, but you have to respect someone who is giving their all. I’m giving the Debbie Schlussel Blog five out of five stars and we can still agree to disagree. Bravo!
