Warlock Asylum: Let me begin by expressing my thanks and gratitude for sharing a glimpse of your work with our readers. Please introduce yourself. Who is the Green Mom Blogger?
Amila Gamage: Thanks for this opportunity to feature on your popular website. Let me introduce myself. I am Amila Gamage and a Singapore-based green blogger. And as you said, I like to introduce myself as a Green Blogger in Singapore.
I write Diary of a New Mom. Although I blog, I am an Engineer by profession and I work in the construction sector. A mom for a little son, a wife, and a believer in doing things great! I am also the founder of Sihela Consultants where I offer my services as an engineer and a trainer.
Warlock Asylum: Tell us a little bit about your background. What part of the world did you grow up in? In what ways did your environment as a child lead to shaping your worldview?
Amila Gamage: I was born and raised in Sri Lanka. However, for the past 12 years, I call Singapore my home. Grown and raised in Sri Lanka and residing in Singapore is an opportunity for me to experience life in different ways.
Warlock Asylum: What inspired you to create your blog page?
Amila Gamage: Actually, I started blogging in 2011 using a free service called BlogSpot. Still, I write that blog Food Corner to share my Sri Lankan recipes. The main reason to start that blog was to connect with the world while working and residing in Singapore. It was a great initiative and I could connect with like-minded people.
Later when I became a mom I wanted to find a way to connect with other moms. However, Food Corner was not the right place. I thought sharing parenting experiences in a food blog is not appropriate as such articles can disturb the readers who love to read my recipes. Finally I decided to write a separate blog for parenting experiences.
In 2015 I started writing Diary of a New Mom which was one of the best decisions I have ever taken. At present, Diary of a New Mom is not just a blog for sharing my thoughts and experiences. It is a wonderful space to share information and tips which are helpful for other parents too. With the focus on a green lifestyle, now I am able to write more on things we can do with our children to help them connect with nature. This article on how to help children to connect with nature is one of such examples from the blog.

Warlock Asylum: How did you come up with the theme and title for the blog?
Amila Gamage: My blog’s name is Diary of a New Mom. I know I cannot be called as a new mom all the time. However, all the parenting experience with my son will be new to me! Even last year, when we wanted to register him for his school, it was a totally new experience for us and we had to spend time looking for the details. With such thoughts in mind, I decided on the name Diary of a New Mom.
However, in 2021, I came up with a big change for the blog’s niche. Now Diary of a New Mom is a Green Blog. I am proud to introduce myself as a Green Mom Blogger in Singapore.
I am in a goal to share awareness about the green lifestyle with other parents. I believe that parents have a big influence on their children. If we inspire our children to love the environment from their early stages of life, they will raise as responsible adults who love our Earth. With this belief, I want to share information and advice which any parent can easily follow with their children.
Warlock Asylum: Did you have a background in writing or was this a developing skill employed to reach the goal of getting the blog off the ground?
Amila Gamage: Well, I don’t have any writing background. In fact, my education was towards engineering and science topics. Every day in my work life, I use much of the construction industry-relevant terms for communicating. Therefore sometimes I struggle to write interesting articles because my writing sounds too technical and a little dry. In such times I stop writing the blog articles and take a break till I come to the mood.
When I am in my blogging world, the words flow naturally and I can write an article easily. I have developed my writing skills along the way. Reading other fellow bloggers’ blog posts helped me a lot as well to improve my writing.
Warlock Asylum: How has your skill as a writer changed since working on the blog?
Amila Gamage: Yes, blog writing changed my writing skills. I can even write a blog post fast compared to a few years ago. Blogging itself is a skill that needs to master. I still learn and improve my writing skills as a blogger. It is no use in writing a lot of articles if no one reads. Therefore a blog needs to have an audience who really loves the articles. I am happy that my blog posts are popular among others and people visit the blog daily to find information and articles that they want to read.
Warlock Asylum: What are some of the feedback have you received from your readers and subscribers?
Amila Gamage: I frequently receive comments and feedback from the readers. Some of this feedbacks are through emails. Recently, when I wanted to focus on a green lifestyle and wanted to be a Green mom blogger, I shared my New Year resolution as a blog post. The feedback for that post was encouraging and fueled me to continue with my mission. Below is one of the comments I received from another parent which I believe worth sharing here.
Amila Gamage: Through my blog Diary of a New Mom which is now in a focused niche to be a Green Mom Blog, I will mostly share the articles on how parents can be role models to their children towards a greener world. Those articles will not be just a collection of articles that share advice on going green.
I will follow a green lifestyle to my best with my child and I will observe his changes. I am sure that our experiences will influence other parents to go green with their children. Finally, I hope I can do a change with my child towards a green and safe world!
