David Singley, a charismatic and prolific singer-songwriter from Saint Paul, Minnesota, captures everyday life wonderfully with his latest EP titled The Singles. Singley is a musical veteran of sorts. He has had a rich career that has shared the stage with such jazz luminaries as Bob Brookmeyer, George Shearing, James Moody, Bob Mintzer, Phil Woods, Ernestine Anderson, Paquito d’Rivera, Slide Hampton, Bob Florence, Tal Farlow, and Dave Weckl.
It’s impossible to put Singley into a boxed genre, as the aspiring musician has worked in various aspect of the music industry. He’s worked in orchestra pit of touring Broadway musicals, Singley has supported live productions including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat starring Donny Osmond, The Lion King, Chicago, If/Then, and Beautiful. Singley’s last album, 2021’s The Long, Slow Fuse of Night, charted on Americana radio for several months over last Fall and Winter. He has since turned his attention to releasing a series of singles. This collection represents the first four of those singles.
The Singles is a 4-track effort that rides upon the terrains of Americana and folk-rock wonderfully. The project is filled with some of Singley’s best work to date. I had the honor of reviewing on the lead tracks of the EP called Change Gonna Come back in September of 2022. This track is a charmer with a pleasant upbeat rhythm that is greatly enhanced by acoustic guitar strums and tempered harmonies that drape this refreshing vibe.
Another track that shines prominently with The Singles EP is Where I Live. This song is a beautiful ballad that exemplifies Singley’s creativity and thirst for innovation. Without spoiling any surprises, the instrumentation and Singley’s dynamic vocal performance throughout the project are bound to leave all satisfied. Bravo!
